The contribution of decameric vanadate species to vanadate toxic effects in cardiac muscle was studied following an intravenous administration of a decavanadate solution (1mM total vanadium) in Sparus aurata. Although decameric vanadate is unstable in the assay medium, it decomposes with a half-life time of 16 allowing studying its effects not only in vitro but also in vivo. After 1, 6 and 12h ...

Hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1), a pivotal transcription factor composed of HIF-1alpha and HIF-1beta subunits, plays a major role in tumor progression by activating a number of genes critically involved in adaptation to hypoxia. HIF-1 is also induced by several carcinogenic metals. Vanadate, an environmental toxic metal, is considered as a potent inducer of tumors in animals and is reported ...

Topical administration of 1% vanadate in a formulation designed to enhance penetration lowered intraocular pressure in monkeys' eyes. The decrease in intraocular pressure was associated with significant decreases in aqueous humor flow. Tonographic outflow facility was unaltered by topical vanadate.

In this paper, the extraction of vanadium from stone coal by roasting with MgO and leaching with sulfuric acid has been investigated, and the mechanism analysis of stone coal roasting with MgO was studied. The results indicated that under the conditions that the mass fraction of the particles with grain size of 0–0.074 mm in raw ore was 75%, the roasting temperature was 500 ◦C, the roasting tim...

The effects of vanadate, molybdate, and azide on ATP phosphohydrolase (ATPase) and acid phosphatase activities of plasma membrane, mitochondrial, and soluble supernatant fractions from corn (Zea mays L. WF9 x MO17) roots were investigated. Azide (0.1-10 millimolar) was a selective inhibitor of pH 9.0-ATPase activity of the mitochondrial fraction, while molybdate (0.01-1.0 millimolar) was a rela...

The formation of vanadate oligomeric species is often disregarded in studies on vanadate effects in biological systems, particularly in vivo, even though they may interact with high affinity with many proteins. We report the effects in fish hepatic tissue of an acute intravenous exposure (12, 24 h and 7 days) to two vanadium(V) solutions, metavanadate and decavanadate, containing different vana...

Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 is a free-living gram-negative gamma-proteobacterium that is able to use a large number of oxidizing molecules, including fumarate, nitrate, dimethyl sulfoxide, trimethylamine N-oxide, nitrite, and insoluble iron and manganese oxides, to drive anaerobic respiration. Here we show that S. oneidensis MR-1 is able to grow on vanadate as the sole electron acceptor. Oxidant...

Vanadate in aqueous solution is known to influence a number of enzyme-catalyzed reactions. Such effects are well known to carry over to living systems where numerous responses to the influence of vanadium have been well-documented; perhaps the most studied being the insulin-mimetic effect. Studies of the aqueous chemistry of vanadate provide an insight into the mechanisms by which vanadate affe...

Cre recombinase exchanges DNA strands at the LoxP recognition site via transphosphorylation reactions that involve pentacoordinate transition states. We demonstrate that meta-vanadate ion (VO(3)(-)) and appropriate DNA substrates assemble a transition-state analog-like complex in the Cre active site. Meta-vanadate inhibits recombination of LoxP-derived oligonucleotide substrates that contain a ...
