Switch design for interconnection networks plays an important role in the overall performance of multiprocessors and computer networks. In this paper, a new switch design, namely FC-CB, is proposed that offers low average message latency and high throughput over a wide range of input workloads. The FC-CB switch incorporates wormhole routing and virtual channels with a full crossbar connection. ...
Input-Output buffered crossbars are popular building blocks for scalable high-speed switching because they require minimum speed-up of memory bandwidth. Scaling the design of crossbar switches to large capacities is limited by technology issues such as the reconfiguration of highspeed fabrics or power consumption. In addition, when crossbar architectures are used in the context of IP networks w...
This paper describes the architecture for a workconserving server using a combined I/O-buffered crossbar switch. The switch employs a novel algorithm based on output occupancy, the lowest occupancy output first algorithm (LOOFA), and a speedup of only two. A work-conserving switch provides the same throughput performance as an output-buffered switch. The workconserving property of the switch is...
A Digital Cross Connect (DCS) switch is highly popular for on-chip communication as well as telecommunication network due to its simple architecture and non-blocking behavior. The switch architecture not only impacts the performance and efficiency of the overall network but also has an influence on device application. A buffered crossbar switch (shared memory) provides synchronization and retra...
Introduction: Requirements of the physical layer in a photonic switching network include a high channel bandwidth for the throughput of ultra-high bandwidth signals, fast switching speeds and optical processing of switching control algorithms to remove the speed bottleneck imposed by electronic processing. Integrated-optic waveguide switches offer a channel bandwidth comparable to that of the f...
Two-dimensional (2-D) microelectromechanical system (MEMS) optical switches have the merits of easy fabrication and high reliability. Since the optical signal loss is mainly proportional to the length of signaling paths in the switches, current 2-D MEMS optical switches that use a crossbar structure have a rather limited number of ports. For larger 2-D MEMS optical switches, we may use nonrecta...
A design of a nonblocking, all-optical lightpath concentrator using WOC and WDM crossbar switches is presented. The proposed concentrator is highly scalable, cost-efficient, and can switch signals in both space and wavelength domains without requiring a separate wavelength conversion stage.
We developed a 4×4 fully non-blocking crossbar switch fabric based on interferometric thermal phase shifters, where heating is achieved using resistive elements around the silicon waveguide. We achieved switching times of 5 μs, with 41 mW power consumption in an individual switching element.
We explain why and how a crossbar switch with weighted fair queues (a deterministic device) converges to weighted max-min fair rates of service. Based on a plausible technical hypothesis we prove that a small mean number of buffers suffices to this end. WMMF-rates comprise the unique Nash equilibrium of a natural switching game—a fact that supports further their use.
Utilizing memristor to obtain multi-level memory in nano-crossbar is a promising approach to enhance the memory density. In this paper, we proposed a solution for multi-level programming of memristor in nanocrossbar, which can be implemented on nanocrossbar without the need for extra selective devices. Meanwhile, using a general device model, this solution is demonstrated to be adaptive to a wi...
