Transforming growth factor betas are multifunctional polypeptides in the cytokine superfamily. They have a growth inhibitory role on hemopoietic progenitor cells in semisolid colony assay as well as in long-term bone-marrow culture. TGF - β2 represses stromal cells, stem cell factor gene transcription, and decreases the stability of c-kit transcripts in hemopoietic cells. TGF-β also modulat...

Body fluid biomarkers of central nervous system damage may help improve the prognostic and diagnostic accuracy in ischemic stroke. We studied 53 patients. Stroke severity and outcome was rated using the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale and modified Rankin scale. Ferritin, S100B, and NfH were measured in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum. Infarct volume was calculated from T2W images...

In 6 patients with primary human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection, concentrations of HIV-1 RNA and beta(2)-microglobulin were monitored in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and in plasma during antiretroviral therapy. Four patients had neurological symptoms. At baseline, the CSF of 5 patients had detectable levels of HIV-1 RNA (median, 3.68 log(10) copies/mL; range, <2.60-5.67 log(10) co...

CSF tau and Aβ42 are considered as important markers to diagnose Alzheimer's disease in early stages. Hence, it is important to assess their status in different types of dementia. The main objective of this study was to assess whether these CSF biomarkers can be used to make the differential diagnosis of AD. In the present study, articles published from 1998 till 2009 were taken and meta-analys...

BACKGROUND Dolutegravir (DTG), a once-daily, human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) integrase inhibitor, was evaluated for distribution and antiviral activity in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). METHODS ING116070 is an ongoing, single-arm, open-label, multicenter study in antiretroviral therapy-naive, HIV-1-infected adults. Subjects received DTG (50 mg) plus abacavir/lamivudine (600/300 mg) on...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Our aim was to evaluate whether increasing iodine concentration, at a constant total iodine dose, resulted in better brain tissue opacification in patients with acute stroke symptoms during their evaluation by first-pass CT perfusion (CTP). MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred two patients presenting to the emergency department within 3 hours of onset of acute stroke sympt...

Moxifloxacin cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) penetration was evaluated by obtaining full plasma and CSF time concentration curves for 4 patients with tuberculous meningitis. The geometric mean ratio of the areas under the curve for CSF to plasma were 0.82 (range, 0.70-0.94) at 400 mg once per day and 0.71 (0.58-0.84) at 800 mg once per day.

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) in the cerebrospinal fluid from patients with meningitis was measured by our modified enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for G-CSF. The minimal detection level was 20 pg/mL G-CSF. In patients with bacterial meningitis, the G-CSF levels in the cerebrospinal fluid were extremely elevated, showing a mean value of approximately 1,500 pg/mL. On the other ...

Background Nosocomial CNS infection (NI-CNS) is a common and serious complication in neurocritical care patients. Timely, accurate diagnosis of NI-CNS is crucial, yet current infection markers lack specificity and/or sensitivity. Presepsin (PSP) is a novel biomarker of macrophage activation. Its utility in NI-CNS has not been explored. We first determined the normal range of cerebrospinal fluid...
