In previous papers, we discussed the fundamental theory of matching problems and algorithms in terms of a network flow model. In this paper, we present explicit augmentation procedures which apply to the wide range of capacitated matching problems and which are highly efficient for k-factor problems and the f-factor problem. ! 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microgrids work in two modes, grid connected and islanded. Short circuit levels in islanded mode tend to be small compared to those in grid-connected mode. Moreover, power flows in microgrids are not always unidirectional. For these reasons, it is difficult to protect microgrids using relaying strategies traditionally used in distribution systems. In this paper, a new technique is presented whi...

Gaining insights into pedestrian flow operations and assessment tools for pedestrian walking speeds and comfort is important in, for instance, planning and geometric design of infrastructural facilities, as well as for management of pedestrian flows under regular and safety-critical circumstances. Pedestrian flow operations are complex, and vehicular flow simulation modelling approaches are gen...

The term environmental flows has become widely used to define the hydrological regime required to sustain freshwater and estuarine ecosystems and the human livelihoods and well-being that depend on them. A large range of frameworks and methods has been developed to assess environmental flow needs and many authors have identified subtleties in the approaches needed for different situations and r...

As part of an effort to demonstrate the use of climate predictions for water resources management, the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) influences on stream flow in the Kelani River in Sri Lanka were investigated using correlation analysis, composite analysis and contingency tables. El Niño (warm phase of ENSO) was associated with decreased annual stream flow and La Niña (cold phase of ENSO)...

We apply a recent extension of the Hele-Shaw scheme to analyze steady compressible viscous flows through micro T-junctions. The linearity of the problem in terms of an appropriately defined quadratic form of the pressure facilitates the definition of the viscous resistance of the configuration, relating the gas mass-flow rate to entrance and exit conditions. Furthermore, under rather mild restr...

We discuss an adaptation of the famous primal-dual 1matching algorithm to balanced network flows which can be viewed as a network flow description of capacitated matching problems. This method is endowed with a sophisticated start-up procedure which eventually makes the algorithm strongly polynomial. We apply the primal-dual algorithm to the shortest valid path problem with arbitrary arc length...

It is shown that surface tension effects on the free boundary are regularizing for Hele-Shaw models. This implies, in particular, existence and uniqueness of classical solutions for a large class of initial data. As a consequence, we give a rigorous proof of the fact that homogeneous Hele-Shaw flows with positive surface tension are volume preserving and area shrinking.
