BACKGROUND Current coagulation tests lack sensitivity and detect disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) only when it is severe. Measurement of antithrombin (AT) activity and D-dimer concentration permits early diagnosis and more precise classification of coagulopathies in some species. OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study were to validate and determine the diagnostic utility of a chr...

This study aimed to develop a cationic nanosuspension of chitosan (CS) and methoxy poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(ε-caprolactone) (MPEG-PCL) for ocular delivery of diclofenac (DIC). MPEG-PCL-CS block polymer was synthesized by covalent coupling of MPEG-PCL with CS. The critical micelle concentration of the MPEG-PCL-CS block polymer was 0.000692 g/L. DIC/MPEG-PCL-CS nanosuspension (mean particle siz...

Objective Cases of Japanese spotted fever (JSF) are sometimes complicated by disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) with an abnormal liver function, resulting in unfavorable outcomes. The aim of the present study was to clarify the correlation between liver function test results and DIC scores. Methods Twenty patients diagnosed with JSF between April 2010 and April 2014 were enrolled. Age...

This study was undertaken to determine the levels of protein C antigen and activity and protein C inhibitor in sequential plasma samples of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) patients. Our normal range for both protein C antigen and activity is 70 to 130 U/dL, and protein C inhibitor is 65 to 135 U/dL. A decreased level of protein C activity was found in 96% of the plasma samples from...

BACKGROUND Early treatment of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) can be associated with improved patient outcomes. The Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare (JMHW) and the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) criteria are the most specific for diagnosis of septic DIC. The revised Japanese Association for Acute Medicine (JAAM) criteria are able to diagnose sepsi...

BACKGROUND: Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC) complicates up to 7% of malignancies, the commonest solid organ association being adenocarcinoma. Transitional Cell Carcinoma (TCC) has rarely been associated with DIC. CASE PRESENTATION: A 74-year-old woman with TCC bladder and DIC was found to have a cardiac lesion suspicious for metastatic disease. The DIC improved with infusion of pla...

We describe a new technique for differential interference contrast (DIC) microscopy, which digitally generates phase gradient images independently of gradient orientation. To prove the principle we investigated specimens recorded at different orientations on a microscope equipped with a precision rotating stage and using regular DIC optics. The digitally generated images successfully displayed ...

Chronic DIC is a rare complication of aortic aneurysm. Surgical correction is the treatment of choice but for inoperable patients or those with continued DIC after surgery heparin can be used to control the coagulopathy. A case with inoperable multiple aortic aneurysm and chronic DIC managed successfully with dalteparin over a long period is discussed in this report.

Model comparison is discussed from an information theoretic point of view. In particular the posterior predictive entropy is related to the target yielding DIC and modifications thereof. The adequacy of criteria for posterior predictive model comparison is also investigated depending on the comparison to be made. In particular variable selection as a special problem of model choice is formalize...

To the editor Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) frequently complicates hematologic malignancy and infections [1]. Coagulation abnormalities and thrombocytopenia are common in DIC, and the extent of hemostatic disorders appears to correlate with disease severity [2]. In particular, low platelet count is predictive of poor outcome [3, 4]. In DIC patients, the thrombin generated may rea...
