The ability of the pyridinium adduct of 1,3-dimethyl-5-methylenebarbituric acid (2) to undergo nucleophilic substitution reaction has been examined. Various types of nucleophiles, including cyanide, barbiturate, sulfide anions and 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane substitute the pyridinium fragment in 2 leading to synthesis of new organic derivatives.

Treatment of 2-diphenylphosphino-6-methylpyridine (dpPyMe) with Cu(CH(3)CN)(4)BF(4) afforded the stable dinuclear Cu(I) complex [Cu(2)(μ-dpPyMe)(3)(CH(3)CN)](BF(4))(2). This compound is a weak emitter in solution, however a remarkably high emission quantum yield (46%) has been found in a rigid matrix at room temperature.

Organosilanes bearing a phosphine imide moiety were synthesized and crystallographically characterized. Reaction of the pentacoordinated hydrodiphenylsilyl derivative with water gave [2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl]diphenylsilanol accompanied by both reduction of the phosphine imide moiety and hydrolytic oxidation of the Si-H moiety.

Catalytic amount of Ce(IV) as ceric triethylammonium nitrate (CTEAN) in dichloromethane or acetone can bring about an efficient tetrahydropyranylation of different types of alcohols to afford the corrsesponding tetrahydropyranyl ethers in high yields. Deportection of tetrahydropyranyl ethers can also be achieved efficiently in the presence of this catalyst in methanol.
