Disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) dependent platelet-neutrophil rosetting is a well-known but infrequently reported in vitro blood abnormality. We describe a patient with autoimmune haemolytic anaemia in whom EDTA dependent red cell-neutrophil rosettes were a persistent blood film feature.

G iven the increasing incidence and prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD), approaches to slow disease progression are essential. For more than a decade, Ja-Liang Lin and colleagues have published randomized placebo-controlled clinical trials reporting that treatment with calcium disodium EDTA slows CKD progression. Lead chelation has been implicated as the mechanism, and benefits in diabet...

A novel Ca(II) coordination polymer, [CaL(4,4'-bipyridyl)(H₂O)₄]n (L = 1,6-naphthalenedisulfonate), was synthesized by reaction of calcium perchlorate with 1,6-naphthalenedisulfonic acid disodium salt and 4,4'-bipyridyl in CH₃CH₂OH/H₂O. It was characterized by elemental analysis, IR, molar conductivity and thermogravimetric analysis. X-ray crystallography reveals that the Ca(II) coordination po...

The bottom dwelling air-breathing catfish, Clarias batrachus (Linn.) also respires via its skin (an accessory water-breathing organ). Prolonged (90 days) exposure to disodium arsenate heptahydrate has caused massive damage (e.g. wear and tear of various cellular components including club cells, hypertrophy and hyperplasia of the goblet mucous cells, altered staining and the slimy secretion) to ...

It has been suggested that osmolarity and/or nebulizer output may affect the protective effects of disodium cromoglycate (DSCG) in asthma. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of osmolarity of the DSCG solution on exercise-induced bronchospasm (EIB) in children with bronchial asthma. A jet nebulizer was used for DSCG inhalation in Study 1 and an ultrasonic nebulizer in Study 2. T...

We have performed two-stage transformation assay using BALB/c 3T3 cells to determine initiating and promoting activities of disodium arsenate, sodium arsenite, monomethylarsonic acid (MMAA) and dimethylarsinic acid (DMAA). Treatment with these arsenic compounds at the initiating stage induced significant numbers of transformed foci when cells were post-treated with 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-...

Induction and propagation of bacteriophages along the food production chain can represent a significant risk when bacteriophages carry genes for potent toxins. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different compounds used in the food industry on the growth of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) and the production of stx-phage particles and Shiga toxin. We tested the in ...
