S U M M A R Y We develop and study an adjoint-based inversion method for the simultaneous recovery of initial temperature conditions and viscosity parameters in time-dependent mantle convection from the current mantle temperature and historic plate motion. Based on a realistic rheological model with temperature-dependent and strain-rate-dependent viscosity, we formulate the inversion as a PDE-c...

This study is inspired by the observation and hypothesis that the spreading and decay behaviors of a jet directly depend on the momentum-mixing mechanism between the jet and surrounding fluid. This mixing behavior is dictated by the kinematic viscosity ν for a laminar jet, which can be dramatically enhanced in a turbulent flow and is represented by the eddy viscosity ε. Similarly, pulsation in ...

Viscosity of the D00 layer of the Earth’s mantle, the lowermost layer in the Earth’s mantle, controls a number of geodynamic processes, but a robust estimate of its viscosity has been hamp...

Based on measurements of the dynamic viscosity, a strategy is proposed to find an expression that relates the viscosity of an epoxy compound during curing, to the temperature, shear rate, and degree of reaction. It appeared that the dynamic viscosity is a unique function of the effective shear rate (i.e. the product of frequency and strain) over a wide range of frequencies and strains after bei...

A critical synthesis of the variants within the thermophysical properties of nanofluids is presented in this work. The experimental results for the effective thermal conductivity and viscosity reported by several authors are in disagreement. Theoretical and experimental studies are essential to clarify the discrepancies in the results and in proper understanding of heat transfer enhancement cha...

the consumer demand for formulated foods containing soy proteins has resulted in an increase in the number of new products processed with soy ingredient. in this study acidified soy-cow milk blend drinks were manufactured by fermentation of mixtures of milk/soy milk in ratio of 100/0, 70/30 and 50/50 and dilution was done after fermentation to 4.5- 6.5 total solid (ts). high methoxyl pectin was...

The damping of sound waves in magnetized ferrofluids is investigated and shown to be considerably higher than in the nonmagnetized case. This fact may be interpreted as a field-enhanced, effective compressional viscosity-in analogy to the ubiquitous field-enhanced shear viscosity that is known to be the reason for many unusual behaviors of ferrofluids under shear.

The common rules of classical nonequilibrium thermodynamics do not allow an Onsager coefficient like the viscosity to depend on the shear rate. Such a dependence is experimentally well documented, however. In this paper it is shown, using nonequilibrium thermodynamics alone, how it is possible that the effective viscosity coefficient of an isotropic colloidal system depends on both the shear ra...

Effective translation of breakthrough discoveries into innovative products in the clinic requires proactive mitigation or elimination of several drug development challenges. These challenges can vary depending upon the type of drug molecule. In the case of therapeutic antibody candidates, a commonly encountered challenge is high viscosity of the concentrated antibody solutions. Concentration-de...

It is shown that lattice kinetic theory based on short-lived quasiparticles proves very effective in simulating the complex dynamics of strongly interacting fluids (SIF). In particular, it is pointed out that the shear viscosity of lattice fluids is the sum of two contributions, one due to the usual interactions between particles (collision viscosity) and the other due to the interaction with t...
