BACKGROUND Whether surgery is beneficial for patients with asymptomatic carotid stenosis is controversial. Better methods of identifying patients who are likely to develop stroke would improve the risk-benefit ratio for carotid endarterectomy. We aimed to investigate whether detection of asymptomatic embolic signals by use of transcranial doppler (TCD) could predict stroke risk in patients with...

Renal arteriovenous fistula is a known complication following a renal biopsy, and may require catheter based embolization. Distal location of these fistulas in the renal parenchyma in many a case may necessitate non-traditional embolic materials. Liquid embolic agents that allow a controlled delivery may be suitable in this situation, as demonstrated in this case report.

This study presents ultrastructural confirmation of the embolic method of producing an ischemic lesion. The embolic method was shown to produce more advanced parenchymal changes than those reported for the same postocclusion period following vascular clipping. With this method there was less alteration in the morphological intergrity of occluded extraparenchymatous areas of the arterial bed, es...

OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate the risks and benefits of short-term anticoagulation in patients receiving aortic valve bioprostheses. BACKGROUND Patients receiving aortic valve bioprostheses have an elevated early risk of thromboembolic events; however, the risks and benefits of short-term anticoagulation have been debated with limited evidence. METHODS Our cohort consiste...

Background Microparticles (MPs) are plasma membrane-derived extracellular vesicles present in the bloodstream. We have described a specific signature of MPs, called microparticulosome, in colorectal (CRC) and pancreatic (PC) cancers. We observed that levels of fibrin-bearing MPs were significantly increased in patients suffering from PC and CRC in comparison with control groups. Here, we hypoth...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Transcranial Doppler (TCD) monitoring for asymptomatic cerebral emboli is currently limited to short recordings by equipment size, restricting its clinical usefulness. We have developed a first ambulatory TCD system, evaluated it in at-risk patient groups, and used it to study the pattern of embolization in patients with symptomatic carotid stenosis. METHODS The system ...

BACKGROUND In a recent study, it was reported that transcatheter arterial embolization with spherical embolic material for life-threatening hemorrhages in various cancer patients was safe and effective. Calibrated microspheres are able to access distal regions of the target arteries, which results in the disappearance of tumor staining. However, there are few reports on the pathological behavio...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to determine the role of plaques >or=4 mm and thrombi (complex plaques) in the descending aorta (DAo) as an embolic high-risk source for stroke. METHODS In 63 acute stroke patients scheduled for TEE, territory and embolic pattern of brain ischemia were prospectively assessed. Multidirectional 3D MRI velocity mapping of the aorta was perform...

BACKGROUND Preservation of renal function is an important objective of renal artery stent procedures. Although atheroembolization can cause renal dysfunction during renal stent procedures, whether adjunctive use of embolic protection devices or glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitors improves renal function is unknown. METHODS AND RESULTS One hundred patients undergoing renal artery stenting at 7 ce...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Although embolization with detachable coils is an accepted alternative to surgical clipping, a major long-term problem is aneurysm recanalization due to coil compaction. Liquid embolic agents are a possible alternative as filling material that might decrease the recanalization rate. We evaluated the use of a liquid embolic for endovascular treatment of intracranial aneury...
