Forty years ago, in 1967, I completed with Enzo Faletto, in Santiago de Chile, the draft of a book, Dependency and Democracy in Latin America. ◊ The book discussed the main interpretations on the theme of development. At that time, both of us worked at the Economic Commission for Latin America (ECLA) better known in the region by its Spanish acronyms, CEPAL, the UN institution that proposed an ...
This study investigated whether formal complexity, as described by the Chomsky Hierarchy, corresponds to cognitive complexity during language learning. According to the Chomsky Hierarchy, nested dependencies (context-free) are less complex than cross-serial dependencies (mildly context-sensitive). In two artificial grammar learning (AGL) experiments participants were presented with a language c...
A review of the research on infant vagal tone suggests that vagal activity is associated with both infant growth and infant socioemotional development. Vagal activity has been noted to increase following the stimulation of pressure receptors as in massage therapy. Vagal activity, in turn, stimulates gastric motility which mediates weight gain in infants. Vagal activity has also been notably ele...

It contains the typology of coreference and bridging relations, classification of elements that are annotated for coreference and the a...
Perceived dependencies lead to time series profiles of prices in markets characterised by overconfident investors that manifest the empirically documented overreaction, momentum and mean reversion effects within a unified and robust modelling structure. Confirmatory bias is demonstrated to induce such perceived signal dependencies.
Dishevelled (Dsh) induces a secondary axis and can translocate to the membrane when activated by Frizzleds; however, dominant-negative approaches have not supported a role for Dsh in primary axis formation. We demonstrate that the Dsh protein is post-translationally modified at the dorsal side of the embryo: timing and position of this regulation suggests a role of Dsh in dorsal-ventral pattern...
How does a child map words to grammatical categories when words are not overtly marked either lexically or prosodically? Recent language acquisition theories have proposed that distributional information encoded in sequences of words or morphemes might play a central role in forming grammatical classes. To test this proposal, we analyze child-directed speech from seven typologically diverse lan...
