An epileptic seizure may be conceptualized as a paroxysmal pathological process in the brain of a heterogeneous etiology with heteromorphic clinical and electrophysiological manifestation. The cases of epileptic seizures are classified according to The International Classification of Epileptic Seizures (ICES) published for the first time by The International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) in 197...

The paper presents the method of predicting the epileptic seizure on the basis of EEG waveform analysis. The Support Vector Machine and the largest Lyapunov exponent characterization of EEG segments are employed to predict the incoming seizure. The results of numerical experiments will be presented and discussed.

Considering the suitability of laboratory rats in epilepsy research, we and other groups have been developing genetic models of epilepsy in this species. After epileptic rats or seizure-susceptible rats were sporadically found in outbred stocks, the epileptic traits were usually genetically-fixed by selective breeding. So far, the absence seizure models GAERS and WAG/Rij, audiogenic seizure mod...

A seizure prediction method is proposed by extracting global features using phase correlation between adjacent epochs for detecting relative changes and local features using fluctuation/ deviation within an epoch for determining fine changes of different EEG signals. A classifier and a regularization technique are applied for the reduction of false alarms and improvement of the overall predicti...

Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder characterized by seizure and loss of neuronal cells by abnormal rhythmic firing of neurons in the brain. In the present study, we investigated the effect of treadmill exercise on gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)ergic neuronal loss in relation with neuronal activation using pilocarpine-induced epileptic rats. The rats were divided into four groups: contro...

post-traumatic epileptic seizure is a common complication of brain trauma including military injuries. we present clinical characteristics and correlates of post-traumatic epilepsy in 163 head-injured veterans suffering from intractable epilepsy due to blunt or penetrating head injuries sustained during the iraq-iran war. the medical records of 163 war veterans who were admitted by the epilepsy...

BACKGROUND The results of a few previous studies assessing melatonin concentration in epileptic patient are ambiguous. This study aimed at: (1) comparing the circadian profile of salivary melatonin excretion in epileptic patients with that in healthy subjects and with circadian frequency profile of seizures and (2) assessing the effect of epileptic seizure upon salivary melatonin concentration....

Objectives: to describe preliminary data referred to epileptic seizures and the probability of occurring these epileptic seizures in the infants ́ first months of life with congenital Zika virus (ZIKV) syndrome. Methods: concurrent cohort study including newborns and infants with congenital Zika virus syndrome attended at the specialized outpatient clinic at IMIP, Recife, Pernambuco, from Octobe...

Researchers have been working on models of brain function for over 40 years, and while progress has been made in understanding and predicting the onset of epileptic seizures, a practical system remains elusive. Deconstructed and simplified models of the brain have failed time and again to capture the complex and nonlinear dynamics which arise at the system level during a seizure. Currently, the...
