Geraniums are sensitive to ethylene during shipping and respond by abscising their petals. Treatment of stock plants with ethylene (ethephon) in order to increase cutting yield resulted in earlier flowering in Pelargonium × hortorum ‘Kim’ and ‘Veronica’, but did not result in increased susceptibility to petal abscission following exposure to 1.0 μL·L–1 ethylene. Treatment of ‘Kim’, ‘Veronica’, ...

The sedimentaion of amyloplasts in tomato leaf petiole cells, when influenced by gravistimulation, gravistimulation and phytohormone epine, an exogenous source ethylene ethephon for a period 0.25–24 h, was demonstrated. Ethephone significantly slowed down the sedimentation serving as statolytes which correlates with its inhibitory effect on formation gravitropic bending stem.

A cold-responsive chitinase gene, BiCHT1, was isolated from bromegrass (Bromus inermis) 'Manchar' suspension cells. BiCHT1 messenger RNA was detected at low levels in nonstressed bromegrass cells, whereas its accumulation was induced by incubation at 10 degrees C and 4 degrees C as detected by northern- and western-blot analyses. BiCHT1 was highly homologous to rye CHT9, known to encode an anti...

Halogeton glomeratus (Bieb.) C.A. Mey (Chenopodiaceae) is an annual forb that is widely distributed in mixed desert shrub, salt desert shrub and pinyon-juniper communities of northern Utah. Halogeton glomeratus seeds gave only 78% germination in distilled water. Fusicoccin (FC) had some effects in partially alleviating innate dormancy while other chemicals had no effect. Seed germination was in...

Attack by the specialist herbivore, Manduca sexta, on its native host Nicotiana attenuata Torr. ex Wats. produces a dramatic ethylene release, a jasmonate burst, and a suppression of the nicotine accumulation that results from careful simulations of the herbivore's damage. Methyl-jasmonate (MeJA) treatment induces nicotine biosynthesis. However, this induction can be suppressed by ethylene as p...

Phalaenopsis orchids have been regenerated by inducing protocorm-like bodies (PLBs) from etiolated leaf sections. However, the physiological and molecular mechanisms of secondary PLB development and subsequent proliferation have not been explored. Bisectionally cutting primary PLBs resulted in more secondary PLBs at 5 weeks, suggesting an embryogenic stem cell property imposed by wounding of pr...
