Feline infectious peritonitis is a lethal disease of felids caused by systemic infection with a feline coronavirus. Here, we report identification and analysis of the feline homologue to the human lectin DC-SIGN and show that it is a coreceptor for virulent strains of serotype 1 and serotype 2 feline coronaviruses.

Virucidal efficacy was evaluated for four recently available disinfectants: chlorine dioxide, potassium peroxymonosulfate, a quaternary ammonium compound, and citricidal (grapefruit extract). Sodium hypochlorite (3%) and tap water were used as positive and negative controls respectively. Feline herpesvirus, feline calicivirus, and feline parvovirus were exposed to the manufacturers' recommended...

We isolated a strain of normal goat fibroblasts which was uniquely selective in that it allowed the replication of xenotropic murine leukemia virus but not polytropic recombinant murine leukemia virus. In addition, feline leukemia virus type A replication was severely diminished in these goat cells, whereas feline leukemia virus type B and feline endogenous RD114-CCC viruses replicated efficien...

Retroviruses from lower vertebrate hosts have been poorly characterized to date. Few sequences have been isolated, and those which have been reported are all highly divergent when compared to the retroviruses known to be harbored by mammals and birds. Here we show that retroviruses with significant homology to the human endogenous retrovirus type I (HERV-I) are present within the genomes of fis...

Retroviruses are distinguished from other viruses by several features. Notably, some retroviruses are present as normal elements in the genomes of virtually all vertebrates (endogenous proviruses). Others are exogenous, i.e. horizontally transmitted agents, many of which cause fatal diseases. The endogenous retroviruses are genetically transmitted and to a large extent their significance is unc...

The recognition and treatment of feline dental and oral lesions are important components in the successful management of feline health. Dental and oral lesions in cats may have a variety of presentations and treatment options. Feline dental and oral lesions include: periodontal disease, tooth resorptive lesions, fractured teeth, mandibular swelling, perialveolar osteitis, gingivostomatitis, fel...
