Two versions of an electronic checklist have been implemented in the Advanced Concepts Flight Simulator (ACFS) at NASA Ames Research Center. The two designs differ in the degree of pilot involvement in conducting the checklists. One version (manual-sensed), requires the crew to manually acknowledge the completion of each checklist item. The other version (automatic-sensed), automatically indica...

Introduction F ORMATION flight of multiple aircraft has been an active research topic for many years. For the classical lead–follower configuration, when the follower is properly positioned with respect to the lead, the drag on the follower aircraft can be remarkably reduced due to strong wingtip vortices generated by the lead aircraft. Such close-formation flight configurations can lead to red...

Recent research suggests Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy (VRET) for the treatment of fear of flying as an important reliable technique for this phobia. This paper focuses on the role of the therapist during an exposure session. Six therapists were observed in 14 sessions with 11 different patients. Results show that in 93% of the observed sessions, therapists started with a similar flight patt...

In this paper, the use of continuous mathematical models of an aircraft in an aircraft simulator is described. The models are of lower degree and less time-consuming for calculation. Computer implementation of the models capable to work faster and more accurately and efficiently is also described. The suggested approach allows to achieve the required precision at accelerated simulation speed us...

Augmented Reality (AR) is a growing area in virtual reality research. The world environment around us provides a wealth of information that is difficult to duplicate in a computer. This is evidenced by the worlds used in virtual environments. Either these worlds are very simplistic such as the environments created for immersive entertainment and games, or the system that can create a more reali...

This paper describes the flight dynamics contribution to a research programme in which the objective is to design, develop and fly a UAV utilising flapless flight control. A circulation control actuator concept has been tested and a Simulink model is being developed for incorporation into the aircraft simulation. Results show that bi-directional proportional control of the air vehicle is feasible.

A piloted simulation study of the handling characteristics of the B.A.C. 221 aircraft in the approach configuration was made in preparation for the first flight of the aircraft. The simulation included a simpli~ed representation of the outside visual world, and cockpit motion in pitch and roll. Values of the aircraft's lateral derivatives and moments of inertia were varied to allow for uncertai...

Initial experiments described here were directed toward using reinforcement learning (RL) to develop an automated recovery system (ARS) for high-agility aircraft. An ARS is an outer-loop flight-control system designed to bring an aircraft from a range of out-of-control states to straightand-level flight in minimum time while satisfying physical and physiological constraints. Here we report on r...

Land development in the vicinity of airports often leads to land-use that can attract birds that are hazardous to aviation operations. For this reason, certain forms of land-use have traditionally been discouraged within prescribed distances of Canadian airports. However, this often leads to an unrealistic prohibition of land-use in the vicinity of airports located in urban settings. Furthermor...

The objective of this paper is to develop a model and a minimization method to provide flight path optimums reducing aircraft noise in the vicinity of airports. Optimization algorithm has solved a complex optimal control problem, and generates flight paths minimizing aircraft noise levels. Operational and safety constraints have been considered and their limits satisfied. Results are here prese...
