Lysis by KOH and hydrolysis of L-alanine-4-nitroanilide were compared with the Gram reaction of aerobic, microaerophilic, and anaerobic bacteria. Both tests correlated well with the Gram reaction with nonfermentative bacilli and Bacillus species, whereas they did not correlate with nonsporulating anaerobes. Only campylobacteria were KOH positive and L-alanine-4-nitroanilide and gram negative.

Bacterial sepsis is a major cause of fatality worldwide. Sepsis is a multi-step process that involves an uncontrolled inflammatory response by the host cells that may result in multi organ failure and death. Both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria play a major role in causing sepsis. These bacteria produce a range of virulence factors that enable them to escape the immune defenses and dis...

To the Editor—We read with great interest the report by Hsieh et al [1] in the 1 October 2009 issue of the journal on gram-negative prosthetic joint infections (GN PJIs). We congratulate the authors for their substantial contribution. The authors revealed that treating GN PJI with debridement was associated with a lower 2-year cumulative probability of success than treating gram-positive (GP) P...

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) access device placement in the pediatric population presents challenges due to the development of infections following placement, access or revision, and/or shunt malfunctions. Here we report an unusual pediatric case of L. monocytogenes ventriculitis/VP shunt (VPS) infection and associated pseudocyst with an emphasis on the importance of VPS removal in clearing the in...
