CONTEXT Central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA; originally entitled follicular degeneration syndrome, or hot comb alopecia) was first described in African American women utilizing hot combs and/or strong chemical hair care products. CASE REPORT A 67 year old African American female was evaluated for the presence of alopecic areas occurring on the scalp vertex, and spreading centrifuga...
Trichoblastoma is a rare benign trichogenic tumour with epithelial and mesenchymal components recapitulating the germinal hair bulb and associated mesenchyme. A 50- year- old male patient presented with slowly enlarging circumscribed solid nodule measuring 4x3x4.5 cm over the tip of the nose. Microscopy of tumour revealed nodular tumour spanning the entire dermis with collection of mesenchymal ...
UNLABELLED Over the years, different kinds of hair transplantation have been compared in an attempt to overcome male pattern alopecia and, at the same time, maximize both the survival and growth rate of grafted hair. In this study, we have assessed the survival and growth rate of follicular units (FU) in an in vitro model, as compared with that of conventional hair micrografts, to experimentall...
The 1990's have witnessed major changes in hair transplantation, most notably the trend towards the use of large numbers of very small grafts and the emergence of follicular unit transplantation as possibly the new "gold standard." This article reviews the new developments that will shape hair restoration surgery as we enter the next millennium. Many aspects of hair transplantation will be expl...
We show that removing the Shh signal tranducer Smoothened from skin epithelium secondarily results in excess Shh levels in the mesenchyme. Moreover, the phenotypes we observe reflect decreased epithelial Shh signaling, yet increased mesenchymal Shh signaling. For example, the latter contributes to exuberant hair follicle (HF) induction, while the former depletes the resulting follicular stem ce...
Alopecia associated with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitor therapy is a rare cutaneous side effect with the potential to progress to scarring alopecia. Thus, dermatologists should make an early diagnosis. We present the case of a 57-year-old Japanese female with scarring alopecia associated with gefitinib, which is an EGFR inhibitor, including trichoscopic findings. The patient ...
A 28 year old albino man presented with a cicatricial alopecic plaque on the vertex. The patient had multiple hairs emerging from a single dilated follicular opening. Following inflammatory changes, new tufted hair appeared in spite of several periods of antibiotic treatment, and the disorder followed a relapsing and destructive course. Tufted hair folliculitis (THF) is a relapsing localiz...
FUT had its origins in the microscopic dissection techniques of Limmer, developed in 1988. The conceptual framework for FUT was introduced in the hair transplant literature by the authors in their 1995 publication Follicular Transplantation and further detailed in 1997. The name follicular unit transplantation was formalized by a group of hair restoration surgeons in a 1998 publication in Derma...
We report a case of a 6-year-old girl presented with diffuse scalp and body hair loss and developed multiple groups of follicular papules on the trunk. She was diagnosed as follicular mucinosis co-existed with alopecia universalis. Histopathological study supported the diagnosis and did not find malignancy cells.
Trichoscopy examination revealed the presence of few empty follicles, small broken hairs, black dots, and hair with uniform nodal dilatations with intermittent constrictions at which there was shaft breakage [Figure 2]. The hairs were of varying lengths; many were broken. Hairs with normal morphology were seen interspersed within this beaded hair. The beaded hair showed bending in different dir...
