Carbon-heteroatom bond formation from copper(III) is commonly invoked as a key step in catalytic reactions, including the century-old Ullmann reactions. Well-defined examples of such reactions have never been observed. Here, we demonstrate that a well-defined Cu(III)-aryl species reacts with a variety nitrogen nucleophiles to undergo facile carbon-nitrogen bond formation.

Three-dimensional graphene networks (3DGNs) doped with a mono-heteroatom of N or B, or dual-heteroatoms of N and B were fabricated, which exhibit excellent oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance. Importantly, the onset potential and current density of N and B co-doped 3DGNs are comparable to those of the commercial Pt (30%)/C catalyst.

The intramolecular reaction of dialkyl peroxides with carbanions, generated via chemoselective metal-heteroatom exchange or deprotonation, provides a new approach to cyclic ethers. Applied in tandem with C-C bond formation, the strategy enables a one-step annelation to form oxaospirocycles.

Metal nanoparticle-decorated carbon spheres (mn-CSs) are prepared by combining one-pot hydrothermal synthesis and post-synthesis modification. The former sol-gel type process is employed to obtain heteroatom-containing polymer spheres (PSs), which easily attract metal species that, during thermal treatment, are initially converted to nanoparticle-decorated PSs and finally to mn-CSs.

The nickel-mediated cross-coupling of phthalimides with diorganozinc reagents proceeds via a decarbonylative process to produce ortho-substituted benzamides in high yields. In addition to tolerating diverse phthalimide functionality, including alkyl, aryl, and heteroatom containing substituents, this methodology proceeds smoothly with diorganozinc reagents prepared from aryl bromides and utiliz...
