Although Mycobacterium ulcerans, M. marinum, and M. haemophilum are closely related, their exact taxonomic placements have not been determined. We performed gas chromatography of fatty acids and alcohols, as well as DNA-DNA hybridization and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, to clarify their relationships to each other and to M. tuberculosis. M. ulcerans and M. marinum were most closely related ...

Mycobacterium marinum, a close relative of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, provides a useful model to study the pathogenesis of tuberculosis in genetically tractable model organisms. Using the amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum as a host, we show that expression of the M. marinum protein MAG24-1 is crucial to interfere with phagosome maturation. We find that two host proteins - the flotillin homologue...

Mycobacterium marinum, a well-recognized cutaneous pathogen, is usually treated by chemotherapy without available standardized in vitro susceptibility testing information. In this study, we have attempted to apply the stable-gradient method (Etest; AB Biodisk, Solna, Sweden) to susceptibility testing of M. marinum in order to assess the activities of eight antimicrobial agents against 60 recent...

Mycobacterium marinum (M. marinum) is a ubiquitous waterborne organism that grows optimally at temperatures around 30°C. It is a nontuberculous Mycobacterium found in nonchlorinated water with worldwide prevalence. It is the most common atypical Mycobacterium that causes opportunistic infection in humans. M. marinum can cause superficial infections and localized invasive infections in humans, w...

A thorough understanding of Mycobacterium tuberculosis pathogenesis in humans has been elusive in part because of imperfect surrogate laboratory hosts, each with its own idiosyncrasies. Mycobacterium marinum is the closest genetic relative of the M. tuberculosis complex and is a natural pathogen of ectotherms. In this review, we present evidence that the similar genetic programmes of M. marinum...

Mycobacterium marinum, the cause of chronic systemic infections in fish, occasionally causes granulomatous skin and soft tissue lesions in humans. Cutaneous mycobacterial infection in two patients owing to unusual circumstances is presented in this report. The first patient was infected through improper hygienic behavior, while infection in the second patient was previously misdiagnosed as rheu...

Fructan was precipitated from a water and ethanol extract of oat (Avena sativa L.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). The degree of polymerization and response on a differential refractometer, based on peak area and height, was compared to fructan collected from a lead-based HPLC column and to commercially available inulin. Statistically significant differences are discussed.

Mycobacterium marinum, a causative agent of fish tuberculosis, is one of the most closely related Mycobacterium species (outside the M. tuberculosis complex) to M. tuberculosis, the etiologic agent of human tuberculosis. Signature-tagged mutagenesis was used to identify genes of M. marinum required for in vivo survival in a goldfish model of mycobacterial pathogenesis. Screening the first 1008 ...

PURPOSE The aim of the present study was to investigate the immune response induced by Mycobacterium marinum infection in vitro and the potential of M. marinum as an immunotherapy for M. tuberculosis infection. METHODS The potential human immune response to certain bacillus infections was investigated in an immune cell-bacillus coculture system in vitro. As a potential novel immunotherapy, M....
