Recent research has revealed that trace metals, particularly transition metals, play important roles in marine productivity. Most of the work has been on iron, which shows a nutrient-depleted profile in the upper ocean. Marine organisms have a variety of means for acquiring iron and other transition metal ions that differ from those of terrestrial organisms.

Once a biological novelty known for their role in bioluminescence, fluorescent proteins (FPs) from marine invertebrates have revolutionized the life sciences. Organisms from all kingdoms have been transformed with the Aequorea victoria green fluorescent protein (GFP), and biotechnology has been advanced by the use of FPs. This article reviews the current uses of FPs in whole transgenic organism...

Background, Despite numerous studies over a decade, it still remains controversial about the biological effects of RF EMF emitted by mobile phone telephony. Objective, Here we investigated the effect of 900 MHz GSM on the induction of oxidative stress and the level of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) in human mononuclear cells, monocytes and lymphocytes as defence system cells. Metho...

Circadian rhythms are self-sustained 24-hour period oscillations present in most organisms, from bacteria to human. They can be synchronized to external cues, thus allowing organisms to anticipate environmental variations and optimize their performance in nature. In Drosophila, the molecular pacemaker consists of two interlocked transcriptional feedback loops. CLOCK/CYCLE (CLK/CYC) sits in the ...
