In January 2006, a clinical announcement made by the National Cancer Institute suggested that intraperitoneal chemotherapy become standard care for patients with newly diagnosed stage III, optimally debulked epithelial ovarian cancer. Intraperitoneal chemotherapy is new to many healthcare providers (i.e., physicians, nurses, and pharmacists). This article will discuss how to implement intraperi...
BACKGROUND Cytoreductive surgery combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS/HIPEC) has become a common treatment approach for disseminated appendiceal neoplasms. Systemic absorption of intraperitoneal chemotherapeutics may lead to drug-induced toxicity, most commonly neutropenia. Mitomycin C has been the most commonly used chemotherapeutic in HIPEC for the past several decades...
The role of hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemoperfusion (HIPEC) in the treatment of Pseudomyxoma peritonei is debated by clinicians. We report the case of a patient who had multiple episodes of short-interval disease recurrence following debulking surgery, and only achieved long-term remission with the addition of HIPEC. A review of the relevant literature is presented.
•Necrotizing fasciitis has not previously been reported in association with placement of intraperitoneal port at time of cytoreductive surgery.•Consensus is lacking regarding the placement of intraperitoneal ports at the time of bowel surgery.•Delayed placement of intraperitoneal ports may be considered in patients undergoing bowel resection.
Twenty-eight patients with assessable residual ovarian cancer after cytoreductive surgery and chemotherapy received intraperitoneal I-131 labelled monoclonal antibodies. There was no response in eight patients with tumour nodules greater than 2 cm, a partial response in two of the 15 patients with tumour nodules less than 2 cm, and a complete response in three of the other five patients with po...
BACKGROUND Cholecystectomy through laparotomy with or without intra-peritoneal drain has been the standard operation for the gall bladder disease for the last 100 years. It implies removal of gall bladder and is performed mainly for symptomatic gall stones. The Objectives was to analyse the outcome of open cholecystectomy without drain in term of complications. METHODS Patients who underwent ...
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility and maximum tolerated dose of Yttrium-CC49 (Y-CC49) as the radioimmunotherapy (RIT) component of an i.p. combined modality treatment for recurrent ovarian cancer. Experimental Design: A Phase I trial of Y-CC49 RIT was conducted in ovarian cancer patients who had persistent or recurrent intra-abdominal disease, had failed one or...
