It is well established that altered maternal nutrition may induce long-term metabolic consequences in offspring. However, the effects of maternal undernutrition during different developmental windows on sex-specific growth and metabolism in offspring are not well defined. We investigated the effect of moderate maternal undernutrition during pregnancy and/or lactation on postnatal growth and met...
OBJECTIVE Women at risk for delayed onset of lactation are often advised to pump their breasts before lactogenesis stage II to hasten the timing of this process. The effectiveness of this clinical practice has not been previously evaluated. This study investigates the effects of breast pumping before the onset of lactation on early milk transfer and subsequent breastfeeding duration among women...
With chronic parasite infection, host response to the parasite may change throughout the duration of the infection as the host progresses from the acute to the chronic phase. We investigated the effects of parasite infection ranging in duration from 30 to 120 days on host morphology both alone and in combination with lactation by using captive wild-derived house mice (Mus musculus) experimental...
OBJECTIVE To evaluate whether the recommendation to offer a pacifier once lactation is well established reduces the prevalence or duration of breastfeeding. STUDY DESIGN A multicenter, randomized, non-inferiority, controlled trial comprising 1021 mothers highly motivated to breastfeed whose newborns regained birth weight by 15 days. They were assigned to offer versus not to offer pacifiers. P...

Women who smoke are less likely to breastfeed their children than nonsmokers. It is thought that nicotine has a negative effect on breastmilk supply by suppressing prolactin levels. The aim of this review was to assess the epidemiological evidence that maternal smoking has a negative physiological effect on breastfeeding. The following data sources were searched: The Cochrane Library, Medline, ...
A single injection of hexoestrol, 45 mg., is effective in suppressing lactation. Given in this way hexoestrol causes a small rise in plasma factor IX levels, of shorter duration than that produced by a customary and equally effective oral course of stilboestrol. With hexoestrol the plasma factor IX levels reverted to normal by the sixth day of the puerperium.
Changes in the duration and frequency of foraging trips by female otariids may result changes lactation bouts hence influence pup growth rate, unless females modify milk energy density and/or total amount delivered depending on trip duration. To test this hypothesis South American sea lions, we measured two attendance pattern components (foraging haul-out duration) three diving behaviour nursin...
