We designed laser-pumped cesium vapor magnetometers in the M x configuration for the control and stabilization of magnetic field fluctuations and gradients in a new experiment searching for a permanent electric dipole moment of the neutron. The intrinsic sensitivity of the device was determined to be 30 fT in a measurement bandwidth of 1 Hz, limited by laser noise. In the shot noise limit the m...
For a Nd:YVO4 crystal, a strong thermal lens astigmatism is observed by using a probe beam technique. By orienting the c-axis of the Nd:YVO4 crystal in the tangential plane of the ring resonator, we find the two astigmatisms introduced by the ring cavity and thermal lens can be mutually compensated. Such compensation improves the stability, beam quality, and conversion efficiency of the laser. ...
We study the use of frequency modulated lasers in interferometric optical gyroscopes and show that by exploiting various frequency modulation signals, the laser coherence can be controlled. We show that both angle random walk and bias stability of an interferometric optical gyroscope based on laser sources can be improved with this technique.
The demand for high-definition surveys within cultural heritage projects represents one of the main factors which promoted the use of laser scanning technology and photogrammetry. By measuring millions of points within relatively short time periods, terrestrial laser scanners allow to derive complete and detailed 3D models of real objects from acquired point clouds. Despite the wide spread of T...
A stable 3-microm-wavelength, GaSb-based diode operated at room temperature has been investigated as a potential laser source for cryogenic target layering at the Omega Laser Facility for inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiments. More than 50 mW of output power has been achieved at 14 degrees C with high spectral and output-power stability.
We demonstrate a variation of pump-probe spectroscopy that is particularly useful for laser frequency stabilization. The polarization-enhanced absorption spectroscopy (POLEAS) signal provides a significant improvement in signal-to-noise ratio over saturated absorption spectroscopy (SAS) for the important and commonly used atomic cycling transitions. The improvements can directly increase the sh...
A watt-level ultrahigh optical signal-to-noise ratio single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) tunable Brillouin fiber laser (BFL) has been demonstrated. By optimizing the length of the single mode fiber (SMF) cavity at 11 m and its output ratio at 60%, 1.04 W output power, as well as stable SLM operation is obtained at 2.24 W pump power. The single pass cavity BFL has the advantage that the Brillouin pum...
We demonstrate a coherent imaging system based on a terahertz (THz)frequency quantum cascade laser (QCL) phase-locked to a near-infraredfs-laser comb. The phase locking enables coherent electro-optic sampling of the continuous-wave radiation emitted by the QCLthroughthe generation of a heterodyne beat-notesignal that carries the amplitude and phase of the laser field. We use this beat-note sign...
We present a quantum-enhanced atomic clock protocol based on groups of sequentially larger Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states that achieves the best clock stability allowed by quantum theory up to a logarithmic correction. Importantly the protocol is designed to work under realistic conditions where the drift of the phase of the laser interrogating the atoms is the main source of decohere...
A fundamental limit to the stability of a single-ion optical frequency standard is set by quantum noise in the measurement of the internal state of the ion. We discuss how the interrogation sequence and the processing of the atomic resonance signal can be optimized in order to obtain the highest possible stability under realistic experimental conditions. A servo algorithm is presented that stab...
