Black phosphorus nanosheets (BPs) show great potential for various applications including biomedicine, thus their potential side effects and corresponding improvement strategy deserve investigation. Here, in vitro and in vivo biological effects of BPs with and without titanium sulfonate ligand (TiL4 ) modification are investigated. Compared to bare BPs, BPs with TiL4 modification (TiL4 @BPs) ca...

I. The role of carboxyl groups in the binding of specific carbohydrates to concanavalin A, the phytohemagglutinin of the jack bean, has been studied using two techniques: (I) H + titration in the presence and absence of methyl a-D-mannopyranoside, a specifically bound carbohydrate ligand and (2) chemical modification of the protein carboxyl groups employing glycine methyl ester and a water-solu...

A novel catalytic method for the straightforward hydrogenation of carboxamides and esters to primary alcohols has been developed. Chiral modification in the ligand sphere of the well-defined Cp*Ru catalyst molecule opens up a new possibility for the development of an enantioselective hydrogenation of racemic substrates via dynamic kinetic resolution.

Ligand modification transforms a polyoxometalate-anchored cubane-type [Mn(III)(3)Mn(IV)O(4)] core into a centrosymmetric [Mn(III)(6)Mn(IV)O(8)] di-cubane cluster, and restores the slow magnetization relaxation characteristics typical for [Mn(4)O(4)] cubane-based single-molecule magnets.

On the basis of mechanism-driven reaction design, a Pd-catalyzed nucleophilic fluorination of aryl bromides and iodides has been developed. The method exhibits a broad substrate scope, especially with respect to nitrogen-containing heteroaryl bromides, and proceeds with minimal formation of the corresponding reduction products. A facilitated ligand modification process was shown to be critical ...

Ghrelin, a peptide purified from the stomach, is an endogenous ligand for the growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHS-R) and potently stimulates growth hormone release from the pituitary. Ghrelin is modified with an n-octanoyl group at Ser(3). This modification is essential for the activity of ghrelin. Previously, it was not known whether other ligands for GHS-R existed. Here, we report the p...

Photo-affinity labeling and mutagenesis studies have identified several amino acids that may contribute to the ligand binding domains of ligand-gated ion channels. These types of studies, however, only generate a one-dimensional, static description of binding site structure. In this study, we used the substituted cysteine accessibility method not only to identify binding pocket residues but als...

The catalytic water oxidation activity of mononuclear ruthenium complexes comprising a pyridine-functionalized abnormal triazolylidene ligand can be adjusted by modification of the triazolylidene substituents, which is readily achieved through click-type cycloaddition chemistry, affording some of the most active ruthenium catalysts known thus far for water oxidation (TONs > 400, TOFs close to 7...

The modification of NaYF4:Yb,Er(Tm) nanoparticles synthesized in the presence of an ionic surfactant is critical to their application in biological fields for better solubility and biocompatibility. In this work, NaYF4:Yb,Er(Tm) was transformed from insoluble, inactive to hydrophilic, biocompatible via ligand exchange modification with polyacrylic acid (PAA). Ligand exchange was carried out at ...

LARGE-dependent modification enables α-dystroglycan (α-DG) to bind to its extracellular matrix ligands. Mutations in the LARGE gene and several others involved in O-mannosyl glycan synthesis have been identified in congenital and limb-girdle muscular dystrophies that are characterized by perturbed glycosylation and reduced ligand-binding affinity of α-DG. LARGE is a bifunctional glycosyltransfe...
