In this short note, we present a refinement of the logarithmic-geometric mean inequality. As an application of our result, we obtain an operator inequality associated with geometric and logarithmic means.
It is shown that in the estimation of an arbitrary signal corrupted by additive Gaussian noise, the optimum minimum-variance estimator is always a simple linear transformation of the logarithmic gradient of the average likelihood ratio which is obtained in the optimum detection of the same signal. Conversely, the average likelihood ratio can always be expressed in a simple functional form conta...
We consider the conjecture stating that a matrix with rank o(n) and ones on the main diagonal must contain nonzero entries on a 2 2 submatrix with one entry on the main diagonal. We show that a slightly stronger conjecture implies that an explicit linear transformation cannot be computed by linear size and logarithmic depth circuits. We prove some partial results supporting the conjecture.
We examine a time dependent singularly perturbed convection-diffusion problem, where the convective coefficient contains an interior layer. A smooth transformation is introduced to align the grid to the location of the interior layer. A numerical method consisting of an upwinded finite difference operator and a piecewise-uniform Shishkin mesh is constructed in this transformed domain. Numerical...
We present in this paper the application of mathematical morphology operators through a transformation of the Cartesian image into another geometric space, i.e. pol-log image. The conversion into polar-logarithmic coordinates as well as the derived cyclic morphology provides satisfying results in image analysis applied to round objects or spheroid-shaped 3D-object models. As an example of appli...
Three types of nonlinear transformations of the joint spectrum in nonlinear joint transform correlators (NLJTC's) are investigated with the purpose of achieving the highest discrimination capability in target location in a cluttered background: logarithmic transformation and the (1/k)th law transformation in combination with the limitation of the signal dynamic range and binarization by thresho...
The condensation transformation, which maps series of positive terms into more conveniently summed alternating series, each term v¡ of which is itself an infinite series, is discussed with examples. It is shown that for a large class of extremely slowly convergent series (essentially those dominated by the "logarithmic scale") the series defining the terms Vj are more easily summed than the ori...
