The malarial parasite, Plasmodium vivax, was detected in 4 species of Anopheles (Hyrcanus Group) mosquitoes, namely An. kleini, An. pullus, An. belenrae, and An. sinensis, from Gyeonggi Province, Republic of Korea (ROK). This study confirmed that An. belenrae was infected by P. vivax, and implicated this species as a potential vector of vivax malaria in the ROK.
OBJECTIVES Malaria has been a major global health problem in recent times with increasing mortality. Current treatment methods include parasiticidal drugs and vaccinations. However, resistance among malarial parasites to the existing drugs has emerged as a significant area of concern in anti-malarial drug design. Researchers are now desperately looking for new targets to develop anti-malarials ...
Background and objectives: The aerial parts of Artemisia marschalliana Sprengel as an indigenous species of genus Artemisia in the East Azerbaijan province of Iran, was subjected to phytochemical analysis, as well asanti-proliferative, free-radical-scavenging and anti-malarialactivities. Methods: The chemical composition of the essential oil o...
as the patient was in a state of commencing malarial cachexia. lie was anaemic, had enlargement of the spleen (down to edge of ribs). Uremic murmurs in the vessels of the neck. Heart sounds normal. Pulse 82 to 90, small and , compressible. The low fever as is common in chronic malarial cases did not respond to repeated doses of quinine. Previous history.?Patient was a resident of ; North Purnea...
BACKGROUND Placental malaria (PM) and maternal infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) type 1 have been shown to affect infant morbidity and immune responses to Plasmodium falciparum. We studied the effects of PM and HIV infection on the antimalarial antibody responses and morbidity outcomes of infants throughout the first year of life. METHODS A total of 411 Kenyan infants who were...
Severe malaria is commonly misdiagnosed in Africa, leading to a failure to treat other life-threatening illnesses. In malaria-endemic areas, parasitemia does not ensure a diagnosis of severe malaria because parasitemia can be incidental to other concurrent disease. The detection of malarial retinopathy is a candidate diagnostic test for cerebral malaria. Malarial retinopathy consists of a set o...
The Plasmodium falciparum rhoptry-associated proteins 1 and 2 (RAP1 and RAP2) are candidate antigens for a subunit malaria vaccine. The design of the study, which looks at the acquisition of immunity to malaria from childhood to old age, has allowed us to document the interaction of HLA and age on levels of antibody to specific malarial antigens. Antibodies reach maximum levels to RAP1 after th...
The birefringence of a red blood cell (RBC) is quantitatively monitored as it becomes infected by a malarial parasite. Large changes occur in the cell's refractive index at different stages of malarial infection. The observed rotation of an optically trapped, malaria-infected RBC is not a simple function of shape distortion: the malarial parasite is found to itself exercise a profound influence...
BACKGROUND Malaria is endemic in Abbottabad and the adjoining areas like many other parts of the country. Depending upon the environmental conditions different species of malarial parasite are found in different areas. The present study was planned to see the pattern of malarial infection diagnosed at Ayub Teaching Hospital, Abbottabad. METHODS Giemsa stained thick and thin blood films of ind...
Glycosylphosphatidylinositols (GPIs), the anchor molecules of some membrane proteins of Plasmodium species, have been implicated in the induction of immunopathology during malaria infections. Hence, neutralization of GPIs by antibodies may reduce the severity of clinical attacks of malaria. To test this hypothesis, we have assessed the levels of anti-GPI antibodies in plasma from children and a...
