We experimentally investigate the solidification of supercooled glycerol during aging that has recently been observed by Zondervan et al. We find that a slow cooling at 5 K/h prior to the aging is required for solidification to take place. Furthermore, we show that the time of onset depends strongly on the aging temperature which we varied between 220 and 240 K. The nature of the solid phase re...

In this paper the synthesis of curcumin and curcumin derivatives is realised, based on the condensation of benzaldehydes substituted by acetyl acetone. The synthesis way is described and the obtained products are characterised in terms of substituted benzaldehydes, colour, melting point and elemental composition.

The influence of temperature on the strength properties of structural materials has not been studied in detail yet. In particular, there are the alloys whose dynamic elastic strength demonstrates anomalous growth with the increase of temperature. The spall strength usually shows little change with temperature, i.e. it decreases insignificantly up to 85% of the melting point, which is followed b...

Semiconductor nanowires (NWs) have been demonstrated as a potential platform for a wide-range of technologies, yet a method to interconnect functionally encoded NWs has remained a challenge. Here, we report a simple capillarity-driven and self-limited welding process that forms mechanically robust and Ohmic inter-NW connections. The process occurs at the point-of-contact between two NWs at temp...

We report a study of the thermodynamic properties of indium clusters on a SiN (x) surface during the early stages of thin film growth using a sensitive nanocalorimetry technique. The measurements reveal the presence of abnormal discontinuities in the heat of melting below 100 degrees C. These discontinuities, for which temperature separation corresponds to a spatial periodicity equal to the thi...

On the surface of water ice, a quasi-liquid layer (QLL) has been extensively reported at temperatures below its bulk melting point at 273 K. Approaching the bulk melting temperature from below, the thickness of the QLL is known to increase. To elucidate the precise temperature variation of the QLL, and its nature, we investigate the surface melting of hexagonal ice by combining noncontact, surf...

The Kelvin equation, the Gibbs equation and the Gibbs-Thomson equation are compared. It is shown that the Kelvin equation (on equilibrium vapor pressure above nano-droplets) can be derived if the inner pressure due to the curvature (from the Laplace equation) is substituted incorrectly into the external pressure term of the Gibbs equation. Thus, the Kelvin equation is excluded in its present fo...

A novel N-(sugar pyranosyl) thienopyrimidine 4-amine derivatives were synthesized. These derivatives were identified on the basis of melting point range, Rf values, IR and 1H NMR spectral analysis. The derivatives were screened for antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities. The derivatives exhibited significant to moderate antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities.

It is well known that semi-solid forming could only obtain coarse-grained microstructure in a few alloy systems with a low melting point, such as aluminum and magnesium alloys. This work presents that semi-solid forming could also produce novel bimodal microstructure composed of nanostructured matrix and micro-sized (CoFe)Ti2 twins in a titanium alloy, Ti62Nb12.2Fe13.6Co6.4Al5.8. The semi-solid...

This study proposes the SCRATCH model for the aqueous solubility estimation of a compound directly from its structure. The algorithm utilizes predicted melting points and predicted aqueous activity coefficients. It uses two additive, constitutive molecular descriptors (enthalpy of melting and aqueous activity coefficient) and two non-additive molecular descriptors (symmetry and flexibility). Th...
