The electron microprobe was used to study tooth discoloration caused by old silver amalgam fillings. Oscilloscopic displays were obtained for the distribution of tin, silver, and mercury. In addition, a linear graphic display technic on the Enhancitron was used. The oscilloscopic displays showed the migration of tin from the amalgam into the enamel and dentin as opposed to silver or mercury, or...

Dental amalgam powder consisting of conventional, spherical-shaped alloy was prepared and added to the diet at the rate of 10% or 20% of the weight. An inorganic mercury compound, a solution of 10ppm or 20ppm of mercurous nitrate was also prepared for a comparative study. Five groups of rats were fed the test diet or test solution ad libitum for 8 weeks. Throughout the experiment, all rats were...

There is significant public concern about the potential health effects of exposure to mercury vapour (Hg(0)) released from dental amalgam restorations. The purpose of this article is to provide information about the toxicokinetics of Hg(0), evaluate the findings from the recent scientific and medical literature, and identify research gaps that when filled may definitively support or refute the ...

Resistance to cefuroxime, penicillin, tetracycline, and mercury is reported for 839 Streptococcus mutans isolates from 209 human study subjects. The MICs of these drugs did not differ for isolates from one dental amalgam group and two nonamalgam subsets: a group with no known exposure to amalgam and a group whose members had their amalgam fillings removed.

This work reports a comparative electrochemical behaviour study and p-nitrophenol analytical detection using silver solid amalgam, hanging dropping mercury, and silver electrodes. For this, square wave voltammetry was employed, where the analytical responses and the redox mechanisms could be compared for reduction processes of 4-nitrophenol by analysis of the voltammetric responses. The analyti...

For Canadians with amalgam-filled teeth, it was estimated that total mercury (Hg) exposure averages: 3.3 µg Hg/day in toddlers (aged 3 to 4 years); 5.6 µg Hg/day in children (aged 5 to 11 years); 6.7 µg Hg/day in teens (aged 12 to 19 years); 9.4 µg Hg/day in adults (aged 20 to 59 years); and 6.8 µg Hg/day in seniors (aged 60+ years). Of this exposure, amalgam was estimated to contribute 50% to ...

Mercury is a toxic heavy metal which is widely dispersed in nature. Most human exposure results from fish consumption or dental amalgam. Mercury occurs in several chemical forms, with complex pharmacokinetics. Mercury is capable of inducing a wide range of clinical presentations. Diagnosis of mercury toxicity can be challenging but can be obtained with reasonable reliability. Effective therapie...

To assess amalgam use and waste management protocols practised by Pakistani dentists, a cross-sectional study was made of 239 dentists in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, recruited by convenience and cluster sampling. Amalgam was the most frequently used restorative material, with the choice dictated by patients' financial constraints. While 90.4% of dentists perceived amalgam as a health risk, only 4...

93 Abstract The findings presented here suggest that mercury poisoning from dental amalgams may play a role in the etiology of oral health disorders in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. Comparisons between MS subjects with dental amalgams and a control group of MS subjects without amalgams found significantly fewer oral cavity symptoms per subject in the amalgam-removal group during twelve mont...
