We introduce new stable, natural merge sort algorithms, called 2-merge sort and α-merge sort. We prove upper and lower bounds for several merge sort algorithms, including Timsort, Shiver’s sort, α-stack sorts, and our new 2-merge and α-merge sorts. The upper and lower bounds have the forms c · n logm and c · n logn for inputs of length n comprising m runs. For Timsort, we prove a lower bound of...

Processing images of underwater environments of Antarctic lakes is challenging due to poor lighting conditions, low saturation and noise. This paper presents a novel pipeline for dense point cloud scene reconstruction from underwater stereo images and video obtained with low-cost consumer recording hardware. Features in stereo frames are selected and matched at high density. Putative matches ar...

This paper presents a method for extracting features for illustrating stone tools. Features are detected from unorganized point clouds obtained by a 3D laser scanner. The curvature of each point in the point clouds is estimated by local surface fitting algorithm and used for detecting potential feature points. Feature lines are extracted by directionally growing algorithm. The main idea of our ...

The registration of two 3D point clouds is an essential step in many applications. The objective of our work is to estimate the best geometric transformation to merge two point clouds obtained from different sensors. In this paper, we present a new approach for feature extraction which is distinguished by the nature of the extracted signature of each point. The descriptor we propose is invarian...

MOTIVATION When two or more genomic maps of a chromosomal region are available, it is useful to be able to synthesize them to create a merged map. RESULTS We show that map merging is an exploratory process because there are multiple ways to combine data based upon what the user wishes to focus on, and upon which particular data subset emphasis is desired. We describe Mapmerge, a program for m...

Ontologies are in wide-spread use in diverse domains. In life sciences, many large ontologies are used to annotate biomedical entities and perform analysis tasks such as functional profiling or term enrichment. On the web, simple ontologies such as web directories or product catalogs are heavily used for improved content categorization and search. These ontologies are subject to significant reo...

The generative revolution in linguistics, started in the 1950s, culminated around 1980, when it was demonstrated that “rules of grammar” were not construction-specific, as had been believed since Antiquity, but following from the interactions of various constructionindependent principles. Perhaps most important among those principles were the locality principles, with such well-known highlights...

We initiate the formal study of the online stack-compaction policies used by big-data NoSQL databases such as Google Bigtable, Hadoop HBase, and Apache Cassandra. We propose a deterministic policy, show that it is optimally competitive, benchmark it against Bigtable’s default policy, and suggest five interesting open problems.
