In 2004 and 2005, 5 metallo-beta-lactamase (MBL)-positive Acinetobacter baumannii isolates were found in 2 Greek hospitals. Isolates were unrelated and carried blaVIM-1 in a class 1 integron; bla(OXA-51-) and bla(OXA-58-like) carbapenemase genes were also detected. VIM-1 MBL in Acinetobacter spp. causes concern, given the increasing resistance of this species.

BACKGROUND Nosocomial infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa presenting resistance to beta-lactam drugs are one of the most challenging targets for antimicrobial therapy, leading to substantial increase in mortality rates in hospitals worldwide. In this context, P. aeruginosa harboring acquired mechanisms of resistance, such as production of metallo-beta-lactamase (MBLs) and extended-spect...

Carbapenems form an integral part of treatment regimen for serious and multi drug resistant Gramnegative bacterial infections. However, there are reports on increasing prevalence of carbapenem resistance in clinical isolates of Enterobacteriaceae mainly due to the production of metallo-β-carbapenemases (MBL),1 Klebsiella pneumonia carbapenemase (KPC)2 and ampC β-lactamases (AmpC)3. Thus, there ...

In the past 3 decades, classical extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) have probably been the main contributors to gram-negative antimicrobial resistance in Singapore. These appear to be being replaced by the newer CTX-M ESBLs. Metallo-beta-lactamases are found in Pseudomonas aeruginosa but do not seem to have spread widely in Acinetobacter spp. and Enterobacteriaceae. Carbapenem-hydrolysin...

A case report of a multidrug-resistant (MDR) infection with a strain of Klebsiella pneumoniae carrying a novel metallo-b-lactamase (MBL), the New Delhi MBL (NDM-1), appears in this issue of Clinical Infectious Diseases [1]. Sidjabat and colleagues detail the presentation and susceptibility profile and give us a brief molecular characterization of an isolate of K. pneumoniae carrying blaNDM-1 th...

The metallo-beta-lactamase produced by Chryseobacterium (formerly Flavobacterium) meningosepticum, which is the flavobacterial species of greatest clinical relevance, was purified and characterized. The enzyme, named BlaB, contains a polypeptide with an apparent Mr of 26000, and has a pI of 8.5. It hydrolyses penicillins, cephalosporins (including cefoxitin), carbapenems and 6-beta-iodopenicill...

Aim: In this study, we evaluated the presence of antibiotic resistance genes among P. aeruginosa strains. Methodology: From January to September 2012, 100 isolates of P. aeruginosa were collected from burn patients. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed by disk diffusion method. Screening for Metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs) productions were performed by Combination Disk Diffusion Test ...

Background and Objectives. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of bla NDM, bla PER, bla VEB, bla IMP, and bla VIM type genes among A. baumannii isolates from hospitalized patients in two hospitals in Tehran, Iran. Patients and Methods. Antibiotic susceptibility tests were performed by Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion and Broth microdilution methods. The frequency of MBL (metallo-beta...

The production of metallo-β-lactamases is the most important strategy by which pathogenic bacteria become resistant to currently known β-lactam antibiotics. The emergence of these enzymes is particularly concerning for the future treatment of bacterial infections. There are no clinically available drugs capable of inhibiting any of the metallo-β-lactamases, so there is an urgent need to find su...

The increase in the prevalence of carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates, particularly caused by the metallo-ß-lactamases (MBL) is of great concern in the clinical settings worldwide. Here, we report the detection and identification of MBL producing P. aeruginosa in our hospital (University Malaya Medical Center, Malaysia), and the characterization of MBL cassette-containing integ...
