Lars Angenent’s research interest includes mixed culture bioprocessing of wastes to produce energy. Currently, the Angenent laboratory studies anaerobic digestion systems to produce methane and microbial fuel cells to generate electricity from wastewater. Molecular biology methods developed in the microbial ecology or environmental microbiology fields are used to ascertain the community composi...

To investigate the ecological mechanisms governing the community structure of the gut microbial ecosystem, we have attempted to simulate the rat gut ecosystem in vitro using a two-stage continuous culture. Extensive sampling of the rat hindgut has established a set of criteria with which the in vitro system may be compared. This paper discusses one of the criteria, the community composition and...

BACKGROUND Bacteria and fungi are believed to influence mucosal inflammation in chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). However their presence and relationship to disease is debated. This study used multiple detection methods to compare microbial diversity and microbial abundance in healthy and diseased sinonasal mucosa. The utility of contemporary detection methods is also examined. METHODS Sinonasal ...

The relationship between plant species coexistence and soil microbial communities under heavy metal pollution has attracted much attention in ecology. However, whether plant species coexistence could offset the impacts of heavy metal combined pollution on soil microbial community structure and soil enzymes activities is not well studied. The modified ecological dose model and PCR-RAPD method we...

Here, we report the draft genome sequence of a Gram-negative microbe found in a blood culture (B08008) from a patient. The organism was proposed to be from a new unknown genus and species. This publication will increase worldwide microbial knowledge and may improve microbial identification and antibiotic treatment for patients.

A phylogenetic comparison of microbial communities in hypersaline evaporites was conducted on crusts from Guerrero Negro, Mexico, and Lindsey Lake, New Mexico, using culture-independent rRNA gene sequence analysis. Many sequences were shared between evaporites, which suggests that similar environments select for specific microbial lineages from a global metacommunity.

Soil microbial communities play an important role in plant health and soil quality. Researchers have developed a wide range of methods for studying the structure, diversity, and activity of microbes to better understand soil biology and plant-microbe interactions. Functional microbiological analyses of the rhizosphere have given new insights into the role of microbial communities in plant nutri...

PROJECT SUMMARY Bacteria capable of exocellular transfer of electrons to solid surfaces, called exoelectrogens, make it possible to obtain electricity from the breakdown of organic matter in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). We obtained several new exoelectrogenic bacteria during this project. We isolated Rhodopseudomonas palustris DX-1, and demonstrated for the first time that a pure culture could ...
