Modulation of testosterone levels is a therapeutic approach for spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA), a polyglutamine disorder that affects the motor neurons. The article by Palazzolo et al. in this issue of Neuron provides compelling evidence that the expression of insulin growth hormone is a potential therapeutic for SBMA.
Of a family consisting of 54 members, 44 were examined. Twenty-one showed signs of a clinically non-progressive congenital lower motor neuron disorder restricted to the lower part of the body, which resulted in arthrogryposis in 15 cases. The mode of inheritance is autosomal dominant with very varied expression of the gene.
Clinical signs of upper motor neuron involvement are an essential observation to support the diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. However, clinical signs of upper motor neuron can be difficult to elicit in patients with motor neuron disease. One postulated reason for this problem is the presence of marked limb weakness and amyotrophy in motor neuron disease. This has been observed in pat...
This study assessed motor delay in young children 21-41 months of age with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and compared motor scores in children with ASD to those of children without ASD. Fifty-six children (42 boys, 14 girls) were in three groups: children with ASD, children with developmental delay (DD), and children with developmental concerns without motor delay. Descriptive analysis showed...
LIM homeobox genes have a prominent role in the regulation of neuronal subtype identity and distinguish motor neuron subclasses in the embryonic spinal cord. We have investigated the role of Isl-class LIM homeodomain proteins in motor neuron diversification using mouse genetic methods. All spinal motor neuron subtypes initially express both Isl1 and Isl2, but Isl2 is rapidly downregulated by vi...
We investigated whether fine motor and expressive language skills are related in the later-born siblings of children with autism (heightened-risk, HR infants) who are at increased risk for language delays. We observed 34 HR infants longitudinally from 12 to 36 months. We used parent report and standardized observation measures to assess fine motor skill from 12 to 24 months in HR infants (Study...
We performed genetic mapping studies of an 11-generation pedigree with an autosomal dominant, juvenile-onset motor-systems disease. The disorder is characterized by slow progression, distal limb amyotrophy, and pyramidal tract signs associated with severe loss of motor neurons in the brain stem and spinal cord. The gene for this disorder, classified as a form of juvenile amyotrophic lateral scl...
Motor neurons that control limb movements are organized as a neuronal nucleus in the developing ventral horn of the spinal cord called the lateral motor column. Neuronal migration segregates motor neurons into distinct lateral and medial divisions within the lateral motor column that project axons to dorsal or ventral limb targets, respectively. This migratory phase is followed by an aggregatio...
Background: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a neurological developmental disorder that affects many different aspects of life, some features of this disorder overlap with some other disorders including motor problems, usually it has been less studied. The objective of this study was to overview of researches in the field of motor problems in people with Attention deficit hyperactivi...
