Abstract It is well known that sediment and mussel samples are commonly used for monitoring of radioactivity levels in marine ecosystem. In the present study, radioactivity concentrations of Cs, K, Th, U and Po were measured in sediment and mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) samples. The results of the present study were compared with the similar studies.

The sister chromatid exchange (SCE) test is a widely used method to detect chemically induced genetic damage. This method has been applied in some aquatic species to monitor genetic pollutants in estuarine and marine environments. Dose response to 5-bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) was investigated in the mussel Mytilus gallopror~incialis Lmk. Experimental assays were carried out by incorporating 4 , 1...

The exotic zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha, is established in all of the Laurentian Great Lakes and may affect benthivorous fishes by increasing the complexity of benthic substrates and changing energy flow patterns within the food web. Native yellow perch, Perca flavescens, and the nonindigenous Eurasian ruffe, Gymnocephalus cernuus, are benthivores that may compete for limited food resourc...

Fish predation interferes with mussel seed population dynamic and is an important limiting factor on seed supply in several areas of mussel farming production. In the present study we assessed the impact of fish predation in a mussel farm sited in the Rıa de Ares-Betanzos (Galicia, NW Spain). To assess fish impact on recruitment, we have quantified mussel recruitment densities with or without e...

The nitrogen and carbon stable isotope ratios (dN and dC) of the pygmy mussel, Xenostrobus securis, were determined for three estuaries with varying levels of catchment disturbance in northern New South Wales, Australia. The lower Manning River catchment supported the highest human population densities and 3% residential development with some livestock agriculture (41%); the Wallamba River catc...

With the aim of developing biomarkers of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) genotoxicity for biomonitoring of the marine environment, the formation of DNA adducts and oxidative DNA damage was studied in the sentinel organism Mytilus. Mussels M. galloprovincialis were exposed for 21 d to different doses of benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) (50 and 100 mg B[a]P kg–1 dry wt mussel d–1) via trophic intake....

1. The structure of a community is governed by a complex combination of processes whose relative importance varies over time and space. Larval dynamics, settlement and recruitment are thought to be important processes limiting adult abundance and distribution of benthic invertebrates with planktonic larvae. 2. Two invasive molluscs with similar morphology and resource needs, the Eurasian zebra ...

Methods Lethal temperatures for M. californianus were determined using temperature-controlled chambers in which both the magnitude and duration of exposure were manipulated. Field surveys of the shore level and solar exposure of upper zonation limits of mussel beds were conducted at 15 sites. Measurements from the lethal temperature studies and field surveys were used with a biophysical model o...
