STUDY OBJECTIVES Nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) is the most common treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in adults, and it has been effective in the treatment of OSA in children. We wanted to determine the effectiveness of long-term nCPAP therapy for OSA in infants. PATIENTS Twenty-four infants who had OSA were treated with nCPAP via nose mask. These infants had clini...

BACKGROUND Bronchiolitis is a common respiratory illness of early childhood. For most children it is a mild self-limiting disease but a small number of children develop respiratory failure. Nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) has traditionally been used to provide non-invasive respiratory support in these children, but there is little clinical trial evidence to support its use. Mo...

BACKGROUND C-reactive protein (CRP) is an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, it has been reported that levels of CRP are increased in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The aim of this study was to examine the effects of long-term therapy with nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) on CRP levels and to investigate whether compliance with nCPAP th...

Oral appliance (OA) therapy for snoring, obstructive sleep apnea, or both is simple, reversible, quiet, and cost-effective and may be indicated in patients who are unable to tolerate nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) or are poor surgical risks. OAs are effective in varying degrees and seem to work because of an increase in airway space, the provision of a stable anterior positio...

The aim of the present study was to assess the impact of nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) in ischaemic stroke patients followed for 2 yrs. Stroke patients with an apnoea-hypopnoea index ≥ 20 events·h⁻¹ were randomised to early nCPAP (n = 71; 3-6 days after stroke onset) or conventional treatment (n = 69). The Barthel Index, Canadian Scale, Rankin Scale and Short Form-36 were me...

We report a new potentially dangerous complication of nasal continuous positive airway pressure applied for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. A middle-aged woman had cerebrospinal fluid leak after using nasal CPAP, with generalized seizures and pneumocephalus. She did fine with conservative therapy for the CSF leak and discontinuation of nasal CPAP.

STUDY OBJECTIVE To determine whether the addition of heated humidification at treatment initiation with nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) would lead to better CPAP compliance and improve quality of life and subjective sleepiness in patients with sleep apnea. DESIGN Randomized controlled trial. SETTING An academic sleep center located at a Veterans Affairs hospital. PATIENTS...

OBJECTIVE To compare the efficacy of single-stage, multilevel, temperature-controlled radiofrequency tissue volume reduction (TCRFTVR) for the soft palate and base of the tongue with that of nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in primary treatment of mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea. DESIGN A prospective nonrandomized clinical study. SETTING Tertiary care referral cente...

The effectiveness and cost-utility of nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) treatment was evaluated in obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS), using a 15D health-related quality of life (HRQoL) instrument in a routine clinical setting. In total, 78 OSAS patients (43 receiving nCPAP; 35 receiving lifestyle guidance) were included in the study. nCPAP treatment had a minor effect on ...

Hudson prongs (Hudson RCI, Teleflex Medical, Research Triangle Park, North Carolina) (a device to deliver nasal continuous positive airway pressure) are often secured with a "Velcro mustache" in neonatal intensive care units. We report 2 premature infants who required bag-and-mask ventilation while on Hudson prongs secured with a Velcro mustache. Effective ventilation was achieved only after re...
