The tensile plastic deformation of dendrite-reinforced Ti-based metallic glass composites (MGCs) was investigated. It was found that there is a critical normalized strain-hardening rate (NSHR) that determines the plastic stability of MGCs: if the NSHR is larger than the critical value, the plastic deformation of the MGCs will be stable, i.e. the necking and strain localization can be effectivel...
This study investigates drop impingement on highly wetting porous films and papers. Experiments reveal previously unexplored impingement modes on porous surfaces designated as necking, spreading, and jetting. Dimensional analysis yields a nondimensional parameter, denoted the Washburn-Reynolds number, relating droplet kinetic energy and surface energy. The impingement modes correlate with Washb...
Abstract The purpose of the experiment described herein is the study of material deformation (here a cylinder) induced by explosives. During its expansion, the cylinder (initially 3 mm thick) is thinning until fracture appears. Some tens of microseconds before destruction, strain localizations occur and induce mechanical necking. To characterize the time of first localizations, 25 stereoscopic ...
Results of initial investigation of thermomechanical couplings in innovative β-Ti alloy called Gum Metal subjected to tension are presented. The experimental set-up, consisting of testing machine and infrared camera, enabled to obtain stress-strain curves with high accuracy and correlate them to estimated temperature changes of the specimen during the deformation process. Both ultra-low elastic...
Abstract The dynamic necking of ductile metallic rods with large strain reverse loading history has received little attention in the published literature. A novel bespoke real time control setup is constructed to apply directly specimen gauge section up a maximum level ± 0.16. 304L stainless steel used as model material this study. subsequent tensile tests loaded specimens are performed from qu...
Silicon nitride foams were prepared by direct foaming and subsequent rapid sintering at 1600 °C. The intense thermal radiation generated under the pressureless spark plasma sintering condition facilitated necking of Si3N4 grains. The prepared foams possessed a porosity of ∼80 vol% and a compressive strength of ∼10 MPa, which required only ∼30 min for the entire sintering processes. Rapid growth...
