A newborn infant had metabolic acidosis, tachypnea, and hypoglycemia. After the initial diagnosis of neonatal sepsis, she was given antibiotics but failed to respond. Further investigation revealed that her mother had taken aspirin throughout pregnancy. This case illustrates the similarities between symptoms of neonatal sepsis and those of a toxic reaction to salicylate.
Ten percent of all newborns require resuscitation at birth. The Neonatal Resuscitation Program establishes the authoritative technique of newborn resuscitation. Errors continue to occur that are related to the use of unskilled resuscitators; intubation; inadequate suctioning of meconium; and the postresuscitation problems of hypoglycemia, hypocarbia, and hypotension. Specific recommendations ar...
conclusions both ua and mca doppler tests were associated with some neonatal outcomes. however, sensitivity of both ua and mca assessments was low in the prediction of adverse neonatal outcomes. by the comparison of these two methods, we found that ua doppler assessment is a better predictor of neonatal outcomes. results based on the findings, poor outcomes were detected in 48 women. nearly 17....
Introduction: Neonatal care in India has witnessed a revolution in the last 10 years under the auspices of National Rural Health Mission (NRHM). The major causes of neonatal mortality in developing countries are Prematurity, Birth asphyxia and Sepsis. Institutional delivery and in utero transport of newborn is the safest way to transport a sick neonate. But unfortunately preterm delivery and ma...
Objective: Neonatal convulsions may be an early sign of brain injury and the presence in neonatal period has been associated with long-term sequelaes such as mental retardation, postnatal epilepsy death. We aimed to determine associations etiological factors neurodevelopment postneonatal evaluate risk newborns that were not related hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. Material Methods: This study i...
OBJECTIVE There are some metabolic similarities between women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS); it is still uncertain, however, to what extent coexistence GDM and PCOS affects pregnancy outcome. The present study was designed to determine the obstetric and neonatal outcome in PCOS with GDM. MATERIALS AND METHODS A case-control study was conducted i...
BACKGROUND To compare maternal and neonatal outcomes of term macrosomic and adequate for gestational age (AGA) pregnancies. MATERIAL/METHODS A retrospective analysis was performed on all term singleton macrosomic (birth weight ≥4000 g) and AGA (birth weight >10th percentile and <4000 g) pregnancies delivered at our hospital between 2004 and 2008. Data collected included maternal age, gestatio...
INTRODUCTION THE study presents the neonatal outcome from a cohort of women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in their first pregnancy. METHODS During a five-year period (2009-2013), a prospective follow-up study was performed at the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Lillebaelt Hospital - Kolding. The study included 535 pregnant women diagnosed with GDM. A study population of n...
In this issue of The Journal, Harris et al1 report the neurodevelopmental outcomes at 2 years corrected age in children randomized to treatment with dextrose gel or placebo for asymptomatic neonatal hypoglycemia (the Sugar Babies Study). All infants enrolled in this single-center trial were between 35 and 42 weeks gestational age and at risk for neonatal hypoglycemia due to late prematurity, ma...
