CMOS RF Biosensor Utilizing Nuclear Spin Resonance – An RF Designer’s Approach to Early Cancer Detection Donhee Ham, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA I will present our recent work that showcases how silicon RF chips can be used not only for wiress applications, but also for biosensing aimed at early cancer detection in direct interface with biological systems. The main function of our RF chip...
Noise properties of large-count spectral multicasting in a phase-insensitive parametric mixer were investigated. Scalable multicasting was achieved using two-tone continuous-wave seeded mixers capable of generating more than 20 frequency non-degenerate copies. The mixer was constructed using a multistage architecture to simultaneously manage high Figure-of-Merit frequency generation and suppres...
The aim of this brief is to point out the importance of co-designing electrically-short antenna-electronics interfaces as a way to improve the system performance. This can be achieved if both the antenna and electronic circuit designer have a common optimization target. In this brief, the co-design principles are presented for antenna systems in the receiving mode, which includes reception of w...
We consider the fundamental noise properties of propagation through slowand fast-light optical media based on gain or loss processes. For purely quantum mechanical reasons, any gain or loss process will add noise to a transmitted light field. We derive a relation between the noise figure describing the decreased signal-to-noise ratio of the transmitted laser pulse and the fractional delay or ad...
This paper deals with a feasibility study for a System-onChip (SoC) mm-wave radiometer devoted to space-based observation of solar flares and operating in the Ka-band. The radiometer has been designed in 250 nm SiGe BiCMOS process. The circuit integrates a three stages differential LNA with 37.2 dB gain and 4.8 dB noise figure at 36.8 GHz and a differential square-law detector based on HBTs, fe...
A low-power, high-gain CMOS low noise amplifier (LNA) for use as the first stage of a subsampling receiver is proposed. The performance of +96-dB voltage gain and less than 1-dB Noise Figure (NF) with very low power consumption is reported for the first time and makes it suitable for subsampling mixer with Track and Hold (T/H) circuit. The LNA contains both tuned and inductorless amplifier stag...
This paper describes a Low-Noise Amplifier (LNA), designed using a 0.25-μm SiGe process, operating in the 4.4– 5 GHz band. A power gain of 12.8 dB at 5 GHz has been achieved with a power consumption of 23.77 mW using a 2 V power supply. The noise figure is 2.2 dB while the input referred 1dB compression point is −6.2 dBm.
This paper presents a Sub-mW differential Common-Gate Low Noise Amplifier (CGLNA) for ZigBee standard. The circuit takes the advantage of shunt feedback and Dual Capacitive Cross Coupling (DCCC) to reduce power consumption and the bandwidth extension capacitors to support 2.4 GHz ISM band. An amplifier employing these techniques has been designed and simulated in 0.18 mm TSMC CMOS technology. T...
A highly linear, low voltage, low power, low noise amplifier (LNA) using a novel nonlinearity cancellation technique is presented in this paper. Parallel Inductor (PI) matching is used to increase LNA gain by 3 dB at the desired frequency. The linear LNA was designed and simulated in a TSMC 0.18μm CMOS process at 5GHz frequency. By employing the proposed technique, the IIP3 is improved by 12 dB...
Actual challenge for RF ICs designers lays in the realization of high-quality integrated inductors. This paper introduces the concept of boot-strapped inductor and presents its application in a fully-integrated LNA with resonant LC preselect filter. n e LNA achieves a power gain of 36 dB, a band-pass of 140 MHz and a noise figure of 2.0 dB at a working frequency of 1.8 GHz with a 3 V power supply.
