A normalized design approach has been developed that allows rapid estimates of parameters like the bend loss, finesse, and free spectral range of the fundamental microresonator modes of twoand three-dimensional microresonators. Based on this approach, the minimum size for a given finesse and the free spectral range for microresonators in silicon oxynitride technology are investigated.

This paper defines reduction on derivations in the strict intersection type assignment system of [1], by generalising cut-elimination, and shows a strong normalisation result for this reduction. Using this result, new proofs are given for the approximation theorem and the characterisation of normalisability using intersection types.

Episturmian morphisms constitute a powerful tool to study episturmian words. Indeed, any episturmian word can be infinitely decomposed over the set of pure episturmian morphisms. Thus, an episturmian word can be defined by one of its morphic decompositions or, equivalently, by a certain directive word. Here we characterize pairs of words directing a common episturmian word. We also propose a wa...

Given a topic-by-run score matrix from past data, topic set size design methods can help test collection builders determine the number of topics to create for a new test collection from a statistical viewpoint. In this study, we apply a recently-proposed score standardisation method called std-AB to score matrices before applying topic set size design, and demonstrate its advantages. For topic ...

This paper defines reduction on derivations in the strict intersection type assignment system of [2], by generalising cut-elimination, and shows a strong normalisation result for this reduction. Using this result, new proofs are given for the approximation theorem and the characterisation of normalisability using intersection types.

Normalization of expression levels applied to microarray data can help in reducing measurement error. Different methods, including cyclic loess, quantile normalization and median or mean normalization, have been utilized to normalize microarray data. Although there is considerable literature regarding normalization techniques for mRNA microarray data, there are no publications comparing normali...

Profiling miRNA levels in cells with miRNA microarrays is becoming a widely used technique. Although normalization methods for mRNA gene expression arrays are well established, miRNA array normalization has so far not been investigated in detail. In this study we investigate the impact of normalization on data generated with the Agilent miRNA array platform. We have developed a method to select...

The goal of this paper is to investigate the effects of normalization procedures for expression data on linkage results. We selected the two most commonly used expression data extraction and normalization methods, Affymetrix global scaling and dChip invariant. After applying these two methods in 3554 expression phenotypes, we identified 45 phenotypes that were more likely to be genetic for eith...

Estimates of the amount of force exerted by a muscle using electromyography (EMG) rely partially upon the accuracy of the reference point used in the normalization technique. Accurate representations of muscle activities are essential for use in EMG-driven spinal loading models. The expected maximum contraction (EMC) normalization method was evaluated to explore whether it could be used to asse...
