Natural-abundance (13)C nuclear magnetic resonance spectra are reported for some simple terpenes and carotenes. The techniques involved in the assignment of the resonances to specific carbons are outlined. The potential of this nondegradative procedure for structural analysis is demonstrated for the investigation of carbon atoms in chemical and biochemical systems.

Understanding and probing small molecule uptake in cells is challenging, requiring sterically large chemical labels, or radioactive isotopes. Here, the uptake of deuterated sugars by Mycobacterium smegmatis, a non-pathogenic model of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, has been investigated using ion-beam (nuclear reaction) analysis demonstrating a new technique for label-free nutrient acquisition meas...

The spectral parameters of the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra are dependent on the chemical environment around the nuclei, making NMR spectroscopy a powerful method for studying molecular structure and dynamics at the atomic level. Conversely, the spectral parameters can be calculated if one knows the molecular structure. The spectral parameter prediction plays a key role in many appl...

The present utility of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy in chemical analysis and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the clinical environment has made this technology commonplace in the chemical industry, clinical medicine, and academic research. The attributes of nuclear magnetism that make the technique especially powerful in biology are discussed. This paper reviews the uses of ...

Photofission enables a unique capability for the domain of non-chemical space propulsion. An ultra-intense laser enables the capacity to induce nuclear fission through the development of bremsstrahlung photons. A fundamental architecture and performance analysis of a photofission pulsed space propulsion system through the operation of an ultra-intense laser is presented. A historical perspectiv...
