In our rapidly changing world where technology is continuingly being updated and altered, the learning process should (must) be continual as well. To ensure the highest quality of work performance, there are three requirements: 1) clearly structured learning processes; 2) well-organized and structured learning; and 3) knowledge and skill pools. These are especially necessary for novel and rapid...

The juxtaposition of new federal and state laws with current reimbursement and budget cuts has created a disparity for today’s providers. Federal regulations like the Affordable Care Act of 2010 will require nursing homes to institute a facility-wide compliance program by 2013, while mandating enhanced nurse aide training and a comprehensive quality assurance and performance improvement program...

We introduce the “NoBackTrack” algorithm to train the parameters of dynamical systems such as recurrent neural networks. This algorithm works in an online, memoryless setting, thus requiring no backpropagation through time, and is scalable, avoiding the large computational and memory cost of maintaining the full gradient of the current state with respect to the parameters. The algorithm essenti...

External beam radiation therapy (EBRT) is an effective and widely accepted form of treatment for many types of cancer that requires extensive planning. Unfortunately, current treatment planning systems have limited or no available visual aid that combines patient volumetric models extracted from patient specific CT data with the treatment device in an inclusive 3D interactive simulation. We are...

We analyse online gradient descent learning from nite training sets at non-innnitesimal learning rates for both linear and non-linear networks. In the linear case, exact results are obtained for the time-dependent generalization error of networks with a large number of weights N, trained on p = N examples. This allows us to study in detail the eeects of nite training set size on, for example, t...

A fundamental step in sentence comprehension involves assigning semantic roles to sentence constituents. To accomplish this, the listener must parse the sentence, find constituents that are candidate arguments, and assign semantic roles to those constituents. Where do children learning their first languages begin in solving this problem? Even assuming children can derive a rough meaning for the...

We present an effective training algorithm for linearly-scored dependency parsers that implements online largemargin multi-class training (Crammer and Singer, 2003; Crammer et al., 2003) on top of efficient parsing techniques for dependency trees (Eisner, 1996). The trained parsers achieve a competitive dependency accuracy for both English and Czech with no language specific enhancements.

This paper describes a Finnish project on developing a blended learning approach to training the merchant marine On Board Training Officers. Maritime Education and Training is regulated by the International Maritime Organization's Code on Seafarer’s Training, Certification and Watchkeeping. On Board Training comprises one third of the Deck Officer and Engineer studies. There have been problems ...
