BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Oxidized HDL (oxHDL) may behave as proinflammatory HDL because of reduced anti-inflammatory capacity and is considered a risk factor for mortality in patients on maintenance hemodialysis (MHD). The study presented here assessed the effect of oxHDL on protein-energy wasting (PEW) in MHD patients. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, & MEASUREMENTS This prospective study exa...

Nitidon, a highly oxidised pyranone derivative produced by the basidiomycete Junghuhnia nitida, has been isolated and its biological activities evaluated. The structure was determined by spectroscopic methods. Nitidon exhibits antibiotic and cytotoxic activities and induces morphological and physiological differentiation of tumor cells at nanomolar concentrations.

BACKGROUND Oxidized Lp(a) [ox-Lp(a)] has been reported to play more potent roles than native Lp(a) in atherosclerosis. We investigated the distribution characteristics of plasma ox-Lp(a) and Lp(a) immune complex [Lp(a)-IC] levels in newborns and children. METHODS Plasma ox-Lp(a) and Lp(a)-IC levels were measured in 747 children and 30 cord blood by ELISAs. RESULTS The mean levels of Lp(a), ...

BACKGROUND The purpose of this retrospective study was to identify an appropriate material that can be used as a covering for patients with a spontaneous pneumothorax (SP). A total of 279 patients were studied over a period of eight years. METHODS The patient characteristics, surgical details and perioperative outcomes were analyzed. We compared the clinicopathological characteristics between...

The oxidative modification of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) has been implicated as a pro-atherogenic process in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Macrophages rapidly take up oxidized LDL via scavenger-receptor-mediated pathways and thereby develop into lipid-laden foam cells. The uptake mechanism has been studied extensively and several types of scavenger receptors have been identified. In c...

We studied the influence of PON1 on metabolic alterations induced by oxidized LDL when incubated with endothelial cells. HUVEC cells were incubated with native LDL, oxidized LDL, oxidized LDL plus HDL from wild type mice, and oxidized LDL plus HDL from PON1-deficient mice. Results showed alterations in carbohydrate and phospholipid metabolism and increased apoptosis in cells incubated with oxid...

BACKGROUND Increased levels of oxidized proteins have been reported in the serum of patients with end-stage renal disease, though little is known regarding the oxidized protein content of the dialysate in patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD) and no information is available as to how this may correlate with important clinical and laboratory variables, including abnormal peritoneal membrane funct...

The dimeric hemoglobin isolated from Scapharca inaequivalvis, HbI, is notable for its highly cooperative oxygen binding and for the unusual proximity of its heme groups. We now report that the oxidized protein, an equilibrium mixture of a dimeric high spin aquomet form and a monomeric low spin hemichrome, binds ferrocyanide tightly which allows for internal electron transfer with the heme iron....

Uptake of modified lipoproteins by resident arterial monocytes/macrophages is believed to be a key event in the formation of foam cells and thus in the early phases of atherosclerosis. Low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) that undergo oxidative changes become suitable for uptake by macrophages through a specific scavenger receptor that leads to cholesteryl ester accumulation. Because the interaction...
