In May 1996 the Denver Zoological Gardens obtained two male and two female Pallas' cats (Otocolobus felis manul) that were wild-caught in the Ukraine. These animals were part of a group of 16 wild-caught adults (eight male and eight female) imported to the United States and Canada between 1995 and 1996. The Denver Zoological Gardens cats were quarantined at the zoo hospital for approximately I ...
We report on the commissioning of the table-top RF-Quadrupole storage ring PALLAS , dedicated to the experimental realization of crystalline ion beams. Images of large prolate 24Mg+-ion crystals are presented, operating PALLAS locally as a linear rf-trap and applying laser-cooling, beautifully confirming prior theoretical and experimental work. For few-ion strings, a radial oscillation of the c...
This document discusses and outlines the model of computing to be developed by Project Athena. The computing model concentrates on academic needs and does not attempt to encompass research and administrative computing. The description focuses on features that are important to developers and users of applications. Software to be developed by project staff is identified and a discussion of cohere...
Maintaining, managing, and supporting an unbounded number of distributed network services on multiple server instances requires new solutions. Moira, the Athena Service Management System provides centralized control of data administration, a protocol for interface to the database, tools for accessing and modifying the database, and an automated mechanism for data distribution.
FAST TRACK COMMUNICATION Production of antihydrogen at reduced magnetic field for anti-atom trapping
We have demonstrated production of antihydrogen in a 1 T solenoidal magnetic field. This field strength is significantly smaller than that used in the first generation experiments ATHENA (3 T) and ATRAP (5 T). The motivation for using a smaller magnetic field is to facilitate trapping of antihydrogen atoms in a neutral atom trap surrounding the production region. We report the results of measur...
(Athena stands for abbreviation of Abstracting and Thoughtful Evaluation of Neonatal Articles; but it is also personified by the contributor. Like Athena of Greek mythology, she distills wisdom from published literature) Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a common surgical emergency in neonates. The list of etiological agents of NEC is already exhaustive. A recent paper published in Pediatrics ...

INTRODUCTION The authors present IR spectra (0.9–2.5 μm) and narrowband photometry (3.0–3.5 μm) for low-albedo asteroids Ceres, Pallas, and Bamberga. The authors compare the major mineral absorption features to those found in primary carbonaceous chondrite matrix material (CCMM) and secondary alteration products. The observed differences between spectral reflectances between the three C-type as...
Two new sulfate monoesters of hemibastadins-1 and -2 were isolated from the marine sponge Ianthella basta (Pallas) from Guam. A third new compound was tentatively assigned the structure 34-O-sulfatobastadin-9. The 1-O-sulfatohemibastadins-1 and –2 were antagonists of the RyR1-FKBP12 Ca channel under conditions where the known compound bastadin-5 exhibits potent agonism (EC50 2 μM).
