BACKGROUND Considering the importance of hospital wastewaters as potential reservoirs for the dissemination of bacterial pathogens such as Escherichia coli and antibiotic resistance genes in the environment, the need for such information becomes imperative. METHODS E. coli strains were isolated from hospital wastewater sources in Tehran, Iran, over a 24-month sampling period (Jun 2014- Jun 20...

Plasmid-mediated resistance to quinolones is increasingly reported in studies of Enterobacteriaceae. Using a PCR-based strategy, a series of gram-negative species were screened for qnrA-like genes. Shewanella algae, an environmental species from marine and fresh water, was identified as its reservoir. This is a one of the very few examples of progenitor identification of an acquired antibiotic ...

One hundred fifty AAC(6')-Ib-positive gram-negative isolates collected between 1981 and 1991 were examined by PCR for the presence of the aac(6')-Ib-cr variant and other plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) genes. None had the aac(6')-Ib-cr variant, qnrA, qnrS, qnrC, or qepA, but two strains collected in 1988 had qnrB alleles, making these the earliest known PMQR genes.

Quinolones are one of the most commonly prescribed classes of antibacterials in the world and are used to treat a variety of bacterial infections in humans. Because of the wide use (and overuse) of these drugs, the number of quinolone-resistant bacterial strains has been growing steadily since the 1990s. As is the case with other antibacterial agents, the rise in quinolone resistance threatens ...

INTRODUCTION Rapid dissemination of plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) has been reported in clinical isolates. METHODOLOGY A total of 149 clinical isolates of Enterobacteriaceae were collected in Beijing and screened for PMQR genes using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Real-time quantitative PCR was used to study the expression of qnrS. RESULTS The rates of qnr and aac(6')-Ib-cr ...

Sir, Fluoroquinolones are broad-spectrum antibacterial agents commonly used in clinical practice. When quinolones became widely used, bacterial resistance to them emerged rapidly and, over the past three decades, resistance has continued to increase. In Gram-negative bacteria, quinolone resistance is due primarily to mutations in chromosomal genes encoding quinolone targets DNA gyrase and topoi...
