Diagnostic lumbar puncture is essential to the diagnosis of central nervous system infections, subarachnoid haemorrhage and others neurological diseases. Myeloradicular involvement or life-threatening adverse events due to the procedure are rare, but less severe complications are more frequent. Post-lumbar puncture headache is the most common complication, by spinal fluid leakage due to delayed...
INTRODUCTION The risk of postdural puncture headache following lumbar puncture can be reduced by choosing a blunt spinal needle or by using a smaller needle diameter. Reports indicate that lumbar puncture practiced outside of the anaesthetic discipline does not adhere to the current level of evidence. To examine the practice among haematologists in Denmark, we performed a national survey. In ad...
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Postural headache most often occurs after lumbar puncture as post-lumbar puncture headache (PLPH) or, rarely, spontaneously as spontaneous intracranial hypotension headache (SIHH). In this prospective study, we used spinal MR imaging to determine the findings that would assist in the diagnosis of PLPH and SIHH and that would further our pathophysiological understanding of...
the purported mechanism underlying the development and progression of cervicogenic headache (ceh) is the convergence of sensory inputs at the trigeminocervical nucleus. this mechanism explains the radiation of pain from the neck or the occipitonuchal area and its spread to the oculo-fronto-temporal region; it also explains the recurrent headaches caused by improper neck postures or external pre...
The appearance of a subdural hematoma (SDH) following spinal anesthesia is a serious and rare complication which mandates prompt diagnosis, although the treatment modalities are not well codified. Patients with post-dural puncture headache (PDPH) non-responsive to conservative measures and/or those patients with a change of the character of the headache should be considered seriously. In sympto...
Objective: Less diameter needles may cause less side effect in lumbar anesthesia. However, some Chinese anesthesiologists consider that bigger needles are suitable for emergency surgery, because it can shorten the puncture period. Present study aimed to compare 25-gauge (G) pencil point needle with 22G cutting needle for emergency caesarean section. Methods: In this prospective study, 200 femal...
We investigated the impact of needle type on post lumbar puncture headache (PLPH) in hematologic patients undergoing LP. We prospectively compared traumatic (TN) vs. atraumatic 22G needles. Twenty-seven patients underwent 48 LPs, 22 with chemotherapy injection. PLPH occurred almost exclusively with TN (4% vs. 30% p=0.02), irrespective of chemotherapy injection.
background: accidental dural puncture during epidural blockade is a rare complication. since postdural puncture headache (pdph) is the most frequent complication, a wisely management method will also reduce the incidence of pdph. methods: five patients who had inadvertent dural puncture during the epidural procedure before hip or knee arthroplasty were included in this study. after dural punctu...
