The prognostic significance of chromosomal translocations, particularly t(l;19) (q23;p13), was evaluated in children with pre-B and early pre-B acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Patients were treated on a risk-based protocol of the Pediatric Oncology Group (POW between February 1986 and May 1989. An abnormal clone was detected in 46% (1 30 of 2851 of pre-B cases and 56% (380 of 679) of early ...

introduction: acute leukemia is the most common malignancy in children and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (all) accounts for 75% of acute leukemia cases. new treatment protocols have resulted in complete remission rates up to nearly 100% in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. today, one of the most important prognostic factors in acute lymphoblastic leukemia is intensity of the treatment....

The occurrence of leukemia in twins is rare but has a crucial implication in the genetic research of leukemia. This report presents 2 pairs of monozygotic twins with precursor B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Mixed lineage leukemia (MLL)-AF4 fusion genes were found in the twin sisters. This study is the first to report on infant ALL harboring the 46,XY, -4, +10, -13, del(14)(q24), -15, +2ma...

Intrachromosomal amplification of chromosome 21 is a heterogeneous chromosomal rearrangement occurring in 2% of cases of childhood precursor B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. These abnormalities are too complex to engineer faithfully in animal models and are unrepresented in leukemia cell lines. As a resource for future functional and preclinical studies, we have created xenografts from the ...

Childhood leukemia, which accounts for >30% of newly diagnosed childhood malignancies, is one of the leading causes of death for children with cancer. Genome-wide studies using microarray chips to identify copy number changes in human cancer are becoming more common. In this pilot study, 45 pediatric leukemia samples were analyzed for gene copy aberrations using novel molecular inversion probe ...

Sequence analysis of the immunoglobulin heavy chain complementarity determining region (CDR)-III of B-lineage cells at various stages has provided important insights concerning B cell maturation and selection. Knowledge of human CDR-III sequences has been relatively limited compared with that of the murine system. We analyzed the CDR-III sequences of B cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemi...

A Campylobacter species was isolated from blood from a febrile patient with precursor T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and after antibiotic treatment, a similar bacterium was isolated from blood 37 days later. Although phenotypic testing did not definitively identify the organisms, molecular analysis indicated that they were the same strain of Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus and were of re...

B-acute lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma (B-ALL) is a neoplasm of precursor cells committed to the B-cell lineage. Extramedullary involvement is frequent, with particular predilection for the central nervous system, lymph nodes, spleen, liver, and testis. We report an unusual case of B-ALL relapsing as an isolated omental mass along with bone marrow involvement.

Intrachromosomal amplification of chromosome 21 (iAMP21) defines a distinct cytogenetic subgroup of B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (BCP-ALL) with poor prognosis that should be investigated in routine practice. Single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-array provides a useful method to detect such cases showing a highly characteristic profile.

Early T-Cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ETP-ALL) is a relatively newly identified subset of T-lineage ALL. There are conflicting results regarding prognosis, and the genetic basis of this condition is variable. Here, we summarize the current status of the field and discuss the role of mutations in the Polycomb Repressive Complex 2 frequently identified in ETP-ALL patients.
