BACKGROUND It has been suggested that extended high-frequency audiometry (EHFA) might be more sensitive than conventional audiometry in detecting early signs of hearing impairment. However, this technique has not been adequately tested in an occupational environment. We therefore investigated the usefulness of this method in noise-exposed workers. METHODS We compared conventional frequency au...

Cytochrome P450 2E1 and GSTM1 play major roles in metabolic activation and detoxification of many carcinogens and polymorphisms in the encoding genes have been reported to be individually associated with increased susceptibility to certain cancer. In the present study, we investigated the RsaI, PstI and DraI polymorphisms of the CYP2E1 gene and the null GSTM1 genotype in a Thai population. DNA ...

Bilateral auditory cortex lesions in Japanese macaques result in an aphasia-like de®cit in which the animals are unable to discriminate two forms of their coo vocalizations. To determine whether this de®cit is sensory in nature, two monkeys with bilateral lesions were tested for their ability to discriminate frequency and frequency change. The results indicated that although the animals were ab...

BACKGROUND Plasmodium vivax infection is characterized by a dormant hepatic stage, the hypnozoite that is activated at varying periods of time after clearance of the primary acute blood-stage, resulting in relapse. Differentiation between treatment failure and new infections requires characterization of initial infections, relapses, and clone multiplicity in vivax malaria infections. METHODOL...
