OBJECTIVE To determine the bacterial aetiology of sepsis occurring following surgery of odontogenic tumours and assess the effect of prompt and proper antibiotic usage. DESIGN A prospective study. SETTING A tertiary referral centre in Lagos, Nigeria. SUBJECTS Twelve patients with odontogenic tumours that developed sepsis postoperatively. Eight of the patients were referred from private ho...

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) has been considered to be the most prevalent infection found in sexually active women. BV is thought to play an important role in the premature rupture of membranes (PROM) and preterm birth. Preterm delivery accounts for a substantial percentage of low birth weight infants and perinatal mortality and morbidity. Bacteroides and Prevotella species have been isolated f...

The susceptibilities of 143 Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, and Prevotella nigrescens isolates to 18 antimicrobial agents were tested. All P. gingivalis isolates were susceptible. In contrast, some Prevotella spp. (17%) were resistant to beta-lactams, erythromycin, clindamycin, or tetracycline and carried resistance genes, ermF or tetQ, or beta-lactamases.

While most bacteria involved in dentoalveolar infection are highly susceptible to penicillin, some Prevotella strains exhibit resistance to this agent through the production of beta-lactamase. The production of beta-lactamase by Prevotella spp. is in turn associated with the expression of the genes cfxA and cfxA2. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of cfxA and cfxA2 in...

Metronidazole resistance among Prevotella spp. is rare. We report here the first case of bacteremia due to a high-level metronidazole-resistant Prevotella sp. responsible for treatment failure.

Collaborating veterinarians from five European countries collected subgingival bacterial samples from dogs exhibiting clinical periodontal disease. Sterile endodontic paper points were used for collection of the samples, which were transported to a central laboratory for susceptibility testing. Anaerobic bacteria were isolated and Porphyromonas and Prevotella isolates identified to the species ...
