Selective progesterone receptor modulators (SPRM) represent a new class of synthetic steroids, which can interact with the progesterone receptor (PR) and can exert agonist, antagonist or mixed effects on various progesterone target tissues in vivo. This review evaluates the actual and potential usefulness of SPRMs in gynaecology.

A mouse was immunized with purified rabbit uterine cytosolic progesterone receptor (specific activity: 3 nmol of steroid bound per mg of protein). After fusion of its spleen cells with Sp2-OAg myeloma cells, supernatants of 11 hybrid cultures were found to react in both an immunoenzymatic test and a double-immunoprecipitation test with the progesterone receptor. Clones were obtained from the fi...

The unequivocal role of progesterone in a variety of events like ovulation, mammary gland development, establishment and maintenance of pregnancy etc are well established. Also the data are accumulating on its role in male reproductive events. In vertebrates and humans, the biological activity of progesterone is mediated by two progesterone receptor proteins PR-A and PR-B, that arise from the s...

The relation between steroid hormone receptors and the response rate to cytotoxic chemotherapy in 70 pa tients with metastatic breast cancer was determined in a retrospective study. Thirty-four of 45 patients with low or absent estrogen receptor values had objective responses to chemotherapy, whereas only three of 25 patients with estrogen receptor-positive tumors responded (p < 0.0001). Furthe...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate progesterone and estrogen receptor expression in meningiomas of the CNS in dogs and cats. ANIMAL 8 dogs (1 of which was treated with gestrinone) and 5 cats with intracranial meningiomas and 2 dogs with spinal cord meningiomas; tissue samples were also obtained from 1 clinically normal dog and 1 clinically normal cat. PROCEDURE Meningioma tissue was obtained during surg...

We performed immunohistochemical studies of chicken oviduct after different fixation procedures, by using antibodies against the progesterone receptor: polyclonal antibodies IgG-G3 against the "8S" form (an oligomere containing progesterone-binding and nonprogesterone-binding units), polyclonal antibodies IgG-RB against the progesterone-binding B subunit, and monoclonal BF4 against the non-prog...

Progesterone stimulates sperm functions, e.g. hyperactivation, acrosome reaction, binding to oocyte zona pellucida and penetration rate into the hamster oocyte. The physiological relevance of these effects has been shown using female genital tract fluids which modulate sperm function according to their progesterone content. Progesterone interacts with specific sperm binding sites that, unlike t...

BACKGROUND Expression of hormone receptors is routinely evaluated in predicting tumor response to hormone therapy in breast cancer patients. Normal female genital organs show cyclic changes in the expression of estrogen and progesterone receptors. This study was designed to assess variations in estrogen and progesterone receptor expression rates in breast cancer patients, who were operated in d...

Clinical data suggest that progestins have chemopreventive properties in the development of colorectal cancer. We set out to examine a potential protective effect of progestins and progesterone signaling on colon cancer development. In normal and neoplastic intestinal tissue, we found that the progesterone receptor (PR) is not expressed. Expression was confined to sporadic mesenchymal cells. To...
