This guide sheet outlines a method for the analysis of cubic crystal forms, this being useful to you for interpreting the transmission diffraction pattern produced by scattering electrons off a thin film target of polycrystalline aluminium. The apparatus also contains samples with hexagonal structures. These are pyrolytic graphite targets, and are available both as single crystals and in polycr...

A liquid-liquid interfacial synthesis using 1,2,4,5-benzenetetrathiol and nickel(II) ions produced a thin black film of a π-conjugated polymer featuring the nickel bis(dithiolene) motif. Its ordered structure was not originally identified due to its amorphicity; however, it was observed to align regularly on a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite substrate using scanning tunnelling microscopy.

We report surface microscopy characterizations of large size graphene films (up to mm) grown on polycrystalline Ni foils and transferred to Si/SiO2. Wrinkles in such films are studied by both atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Local graphitic lattice structures of the films are imaged with atomic-resolution STM and compared with those of the highly ordered py...

We provide evidence that proton irradiation of energy 2.25 MeV on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite samples triggers ferro- or ferrimagnetism. Measurements performed with a superconducting quantum interferometer device and magnetic force microscopy reveal that the magnetic ordering is stable at room temperature.

Pyrolytic graphite particles modified with hydrogenase and an NAD(+)/NADH cycling enzyme provide a modular heterogeneous catalyst system for regeneration of oxidised or reduced nicotinamide cofactors using H(2) and H(+) as electron source or sink. Particles can be tuned for cofactor supply under different conditions by appropriate choice of hydrogenase.

As electrode materials for analytical applications, carbon-based electrodes have been widely employed as detectors for high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), capillary electrophoresis (CE) and various biosensors. Carbon materials usually shows wider potential window compared with those of novel metals such as platinum and gold electrode. These electrodes are chemically stable, highly co...

A variety of samples, namely HOPG (highly ordered pyrolytic graphite), gold (111), a nanogrid and tantalum disulfide (TaS2) were scanned using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) and analysed. The lattice constant of graphite was found to be (0.141 ± 0.038) nm which is in agreement with the literature value. Scans of the other samples provided good images which were analysed numerically in a ...

We report the near-edge x-ray absorption fine-structure (NEXAFS) spectrum of a single layer of graphite (graphene) obtained by micromechanical cleavage of highly ordered pyrolytic graphite on a SiO2 substrate. We utilized a photoemission electron microscope to separately study single-, double-, and few-layers graphene samples. In single-layer graphene we observe a splitting of the pi resonance ...

The analytical performance of pyrolytic and non-pyrolytic boron nitride (PBN and NBN) platforms, attached to a commercially available graphite tube furnace, in electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS) for Cd was studied. Although the tolerable pyrolysis temperature was 300 degrees C with the conventional pyrolytic graphite platform, it increased to 600 and 950 degrees C with the PB...

Graphitic carbon is currently considered the state-of-the-artmaterial for the negative electrode in lithium ion cells, mainly due to its high reversibility and low operating potential. However, carbon anodes exhibit mediocre charge/ discharge rate performance, which contributes to severe transport-induced surface structural damage upon prolonged cycling and limits the lifetime of the cell. Lith...
