Maize and Arabidopsis root apical meristems differ in several aspects of their radial organization and ontogeny. Despite the large evolutionary distance and differences in root radial patterning, analysis of the putative maize ortholog of the Arabidopsis patterning gene SCARECROW (SCR) revealed expression localized to the endodermis, which is similar to its expression in Arabidopsis. Expression...

The radial interaction of heat transport is clarified by cross-correlation between electron heat flux and electron temperature gradient in LHD. Correlations between the heat transport dynamics and the radial structures of turbulence are also investigated. The existence of a turbulence modulator is discerned by using the conventional reflectometry signals. The amplitude of high frequency (> 100k...

Received July 7, 1993; revised manuscript received November 22, 1993; accepted December 14, 1993 We propose orthogonal Fourier-Mellin moments, which are more suitable than Zernike moments, for scaleand rotation-invariant pattern recognition. The new orthogonal radial polynomials have more zeros than do the Zernike radial polynomials in the region of small radial distance. The orthogonal Fourier...

We report on the discovery of eleven multimode SX Phoenicis–type blue stragglers in the field of the southern globular cluster NGC 3201. In these variables both radial and non-radial modes are excited. For three variables the derived period ratio is close to that observed in SX Phoenicis itself, suggesting that these stars are pulsating in the fundamental and the first-overtone radial modes. Us...

Accurate radial velocities for a sample of 71 planetary nebulae, mostly located in the direction of the Galactic Centre, are presented. Most of the nebulae discussed in this paper are likely members of the Galactic bulge, based on their radial velocity, longitude and derived distance. The data give a large improvement over existing catalogues, doubling the sample of bulge planetary nebulae with...

In the Norwegian minke whale surveys, the position of an observed whale relative to the vessel is given by the radial distance and the angle from the transect line. In the present paper, the bias and the variability in the observed radial distances and angles is estimated from buoy sighting experiments. The variability of observed angles is further modified by using data for duplicate observati...

An analysis of the radial distribution of ab-type RR Lyrae star periods in the outer region of the globular cluster M3 at r ≥ 0.83′ has been performed. That analysis points towards a real shortage of stars with long periods in the radial distance range 3.5′ to 6′ (or about 7 to 12 core radii). A brief discussion is presented. The origin of the phenomenon remains an open question.

Wood specific gravity (SG) has long been used by foresters as an index for wood properties. More recently, SG has been widely used by ecologists as a plant functional trait and as a key variable in estimates of biomass. However, sampling wood to determine SG can be problematic; at present, the most common method is sampling with an increment borer to extract a bark-to-pith core—a difficult task...

This paper describes a new result on a wavelet scheme for scattered data interpolation extensively described in [2]. The interpolation scheme of [2] already has several advantages as compared to more classical RBF: it is highly stable and highly adaptive. In this paper, we describe a new property of this scheme: that the approximation error locally only depends on a local sample density or fill...

The radial basis function (RBF) collocation techniques for the numerical solution of partial differential equation problems are increasingly popular in recent years thanks to their striking merits being inherently meshless, integration-free, and highly accurate. However, the RBF-based methods have markedly been limited to handle isotropic problems due to the use of the isotropic Euclidean dista...
