OBJECTIVE Although the emotion regulatory difficulties in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) are predicted to associate with impaired cardiovascular autonomic regulation, the changes of cardiac vagal regulation MDD are incompletely understood. The aim of the study was to evaluate the respiratory sinus arrhythmia (as an index of cardiac vagal regulation) using the spectral analysis in...
OBJECTIVE To describe lung function findings in overweight children and adolescents without respiratory disease. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study involving male and female overweight children and adolescents in the 8-18 year age bracket, without respiratory disease. All of the participants underwent anthropometric assessment, chest X-ray, pulse oximetry, spirometry, and lung volume me...
Very long-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (VLCAD) is a key enzyme catalysing the dehydrogenation of long-chain fatty acids in mitochondrial beta-oxidation. VLCAD deficiency is a genetic disorder that commonly presents in infancy or childhood with episodes of hypoketotic hypoglycaemia, cardiomyopathy and liver dysfunction. The present study reports an 18-yr-old Chinese female who present...
A case of temporary acquired central hypoventilation following craniopharyngioma surgery is presented. This is a complication which has not been previously described in suprasellar surgery. Potentially mechanisms of the respiratory disorder are discussed. The most likely etiology is felt to be respiratory drive depression stemming from hypothalamic injury. (J Pediatr Neurol 2004; 2(3): 165-168).
Tracheobronchomegaly (TBM) or Mounier Kuhn syndrome is a rare disorder of uncertain aetiology characterized by marked dilatation of trachea and bronchi and recurrent lower respiratory tract infection. We report a case in a 20 year old male presenting with recurrent lower respiratory tract infection.

Nonhypercapnic central sleep apnoea is a disorder of respiratory control characterized by hyperventilation previously attributed to the stimulation of either pulmonary vagal afferent nerve fibres or respiratory chemoreceptors. This report describes central sleep apnoea in a patient with congestive heart failure following bilateral lung transplant in whom pulmonary vagal afferent nerve activity ...
The onset of the adult form of Pompe disease, also known as acid maltase deficiency or glycogen storage disease type II, is a slow progressive muscular disorder in which little correlation exists between respiratory function and locomotor function [1]. The greater degree of respiratory dysfunction, compared with mobility loss, is mainly ascribable to the predominant and progressive involvement ...
